Shelley Hunter has joined Indiana Humanities as its president and CEO, guiding the direction and overseeing operations of the statewide nonprofit. Hunter was previously the CEO at College Mentors for Kids for 10 years.
“I’m thrilled to welcome a leader who understands that lasting impact starts with strong relationships,” said Katie Glick, Indiana Humanities board chair. “Shelley has a remarkable ability to bring people together, support the work of partners, and build collaborations that help communities thrive. She is the right leader to guide Indiana Humanities into its next chapter.”
Hunter will work in close partnership with the board of directors and staff to promote the public humanities across Indiana, fostering learning, connection, and understanding through programs, grants, and public conversation. She will also oversee the Lilly Scholars Network and the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Awards, signature initiatives housed within Indiana Humanities.
“I have admired the work of this organization for many years and am excited to join this amazing team,” said Hunter. “Indiana Humanities’ unique ability to create a welcoming environment for open dialogue anywhere — in the woods, at the library, or on a walking tour — energizes me and makes me hopeful for what we all can accomplish together throughout the state.”
At College Mentors for Kids, Hunter led a national mentoring organization that connected college students to elementary school children, helping both groups develop confidence, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships.
Hunter has also held leadership positions with Harrison College, Indiana University Foundation, Indiana Sports Corporation, and in the banking sector. She has been actively involved in numerous civic and volunteer leadership roles throughout Indiana and has served on nonprofit boards, advisory committees, and host committees for major community and sporting events.
She received her bachelor’s degree from DePauw University and her master’s degree in philanthropic studies from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University.
Hunter replaces Keira Amstutz, who served as president and CEO of Indiana Humanities for 18 years.
