It’s time to start training for Indiana Humanities’ seventh annual historic “bar” crawl.
“Huddle Up: A Boozy Throwback Through Indy Sports History” will be the theme for this year’s event on July 24. Participants will journey through downtown Indianapolis, visiting five stops to learn about the significant people, places and events that forged the Circle City’s sports history. Two of the featured stories on this year’s crawl include the development of Title IX and the rise of women’s athletics and cyclist Major Taylor’s ascendency to worldwide fame.
The vignettes and characters are drawn from the history of Indianapolis and are the result of hours of research in the archives of the Indiana Historical Society, IUPUI and other local institutions. Actors from the Indiana Historical Society will bring the scenes to life at venues (some bars, some surprises) around downtown.
Thematically appropriate snacks and drinks, as well as giveaways and photo booths, round out the one-of-a-kind event for sports and history enthusiasts.
“Indianapolis is known around the world as a sports city, from the Indianapolis 500 and Hoosier Hysteria, to being the headquarters of the NCAA and the home of the 2012 Super Bowl. We’re excited to dig deeper into that history and draw out a few stories that you may not know,” said Keira Amstutz, president and CEO at Indiana Humanities. “People have been suggesting a sports theme for years, so we expect tickets for this always-popular event to go quickly.”
