Event Details

The Indiana Council on World Affairs, the International Center, the Global Village Welcome Center and the Center for Interfaith Cooperation will present “Migration-Immigration: Responding to Demographic Shifts.” The program features a series of activities designed to help participants better understand the social, cultural and economic drivers of immigration and to identify strategies for successful integration of immigrants into the state of Indiana.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

4:00 p.m.—Workshops and Networking Sessions (free). Choose from the following concurrent sessions:

  • Global Competency Workshop facilitated by the International Center. In this session, you’ll learn how to value cultural differences so you can better engage with different cultures and reduce anxiety in binational or international groups. You’ll also gain skills in observing and describing behaviors to avoid ineffective communication in intercultural settings. Finally, you’ll gain an understanding of how our cultural differences influence the way we view other groups. By the end of this introductory workshop, you’ll be better prepared to live and work in another culture or communicate with people from other departments, disciplines, genders, races and ages.
  • Roundtable Networking with community experts. In this session, you’ll engage in a series of short, focused meetings with several service providers. You’ll rotate through different tables, each hosted by a knowledgeable professional, to learn about immigration and global mobility services specific to central Indiana. Following the speed rounds, you may visit the “Cultural Corners,” where you can continue conversations, exchange contact information and explore potential collaborations.
  • “Cultural Corners” networking with exhibitors. This session will provide you the opportunity to meet with leaders from various organizations that provide services for our international newcomers. Organizations will display colorful exhibits, and a representative will be present to explain and answer questions about their services. Volunteer and donation slips will be available. Look forward to meeting vibrant community leaders!

5:30 p.m.—Networking Reception (free, with cash bar). Global cultural exhibits will be on display.

5:45 p.m.—Check-In for Dinner.

6:00 p.m.—Dinner with Global Cuisine ($25). Dinner is optional; prepaid reservations are required. Vegetarian options are available.

6:30 p.m.—Program and Keynote Presentation (free). Jennifer Sciubba, Ph.D., expert on political demography and author of 8 Billion and Counting: How Sex, Death, and Migration Shape Our World, will deliver the keynote address. Indy Reads will sell copies of 8 Billion and Counting, and Sciubba will be available to sign them.
