Event Details
To mark the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Jeffersonville, Indiana, the Jeffersonville chapter of the American Friends of Lafayette is partnering with community organizations to present a series of public programs. This presentation will focus on the life of Adrienne Lafayette, the Marquis de Lafayette’s wife, from her marriage in 1774 to her death in 1807. In three segments—during the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and time spent at chateau La Grange in Olmütz—the presentation will show how Adrienne challenged conventional mores and roles for women. Adrienne’s involvement in her husband’s political life was crucial to the pivotal revolutions of the 18th century. On a personal level, her courage, strength, and ingenuity saved Lafayette’s life, their son’s life, and their family’s future in France. Award-winning author Kathryn Goodwin Tone will deliver the presentation, focusing on research for her forthcoming biography of Adrienne. Tone is the winner of a 2020 National Indie Excellence Award and a finalist in the 2022 Young Adult Virginia Author Awards. The presentation is recommended for teen and adult patrons and will take place in the North Program Room of the Jeffersonville Township Public Library.
