The Glass Menagerie is filled with conflict and struggle.  Tom faces an inner battle between his responsibility to his sister and his desire to run from his mother.  Amanda continuously beats down on Tom in an attempt to get him to give up his dreams and take care of his sister, but this only drives him further away.  The only person who lacks this competitive spirit is Laura, who is caught between the other two.  Laura is simply a sweet girl who lacks confidence, which prevents her from doing well in several things, like Business College.  The Glass Menagerie is filled with the competitive game spirit, but in the end it only hurts those who play it.

The Glass Menagerie, is available through Indiana Humanities Novel Conversations lending library. Request a set (for free!) for your book club today.

In September, October and November, Indiana Humanities is exploring the topic of “civility,” as part of its Spirit of Competition theme.
