Civility in the U.S. Senate Debate

Beyond mudslinging commercials, debates are one of the forums where the incivility is at the forefront. The recent Indiana senatorial debate between Mourdock, Donnelly and Horning demonstrated both incivility and a call for civility.

Unfortunately, the only politicians who seem to call for civility this season are the ones that explicitly have something to gain from the demise of a two-party system. How can we foster the notion that civility is important for all politicians?

In September, October and November, Indiana Humanities is exploring the topic of “civility,” as part of its Spirit of Competition theme.
