In the early 20th century, Black women established their own Young Women’s Christian Association in Indianapolis to advocate for themselves and to challenge white supremacy. Learn about the history and legacy of a critical institution in the history of Black Indianapolis and women’s activism during this 40-minute documentary. A post-screening conversation with community leader Nichelle Hayes; filmmakers Dr. Joseph Tucker Edmonds, Dr. Kim Williams-Pulfer, and Dr. Nancy Marie Robertson; and the audience will explore the political and social activism of the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA leaders and the importance of “third spaces” in promoting social justice.
