“Race, Religion, and Politics in the Age of Frederick Douglass”: An Online Symposium

The biannual Frederick Douglass Symposium returns with a three-day online event sponsored by the Frederick Douglass Papers. Leading Douglass scholars will present papers on Douglass’s impact on religion and politics in the United States and lead discussions on the future of Douglass scholarship and teaching.

The symposium will include the following programs.

Wednesday, February 16, 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.

  • The keynote address, “Popular Philosophy with Soul: Frederick Douglass’s Radical Humanism,” delivered by Nick Bromell (University of Massachusetts)
  • A panel discussion on Frederick Douglass and American Politics featuring Julie Husband (University of Northern Iowa), Robert Levine (University of Maryland), Kelvin Black (CUNY Hunter College) and Jack Kaufman-McKivigan and Alex Schwartz (IUPUI)

Thursday, February 17, 12:30 to 5:00 p.m.

  • A panel discussion on Frederick Douglass and American Religion featuring Joseph Tucker-Edmonds (IUPUI), Maurice Wallace (Rutgers University), Heather L. Kaufman (Christian Theological Seminary) and Danjuma Gibson (Calvin Theological Seminary)
  • A roundtable on “Placing Frederick Douglass: Future Directions in Frederick Douglass Research” featuring Jeff Duvall (Frederick Douglass Papers, IUPUI), Robert Wallace (Northern Kentucky University), Ezra Greenspan (Southern Methodist University), Jennifer Hayes (Tennessee State University) and Owen Dwyer and Jack Kaufman-McKivigan (IUPUI)

Friday, February 18, 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.

  • Readings of Frederick Douglass speeches by students from the IUPUI Speakers’ Lab
  • A “Reading Frederick Douglass Together” session highlighting Douglass’s “Lessons of the Hour”
  • A performance of “Spirit of Frederick Douglass” by Michael E. Crutcher
  • An interview with Frederick Douglass reenactor Michael E. Crutcher on “Bringing the Spirit of Frederick Douglass Alive for Twenty-First-Century Audiences”
