Indiana Uplands Winter Food Conference: Food Apartheid Panel
Hear from three Indianapolis-area BIPOC farmers who are working against the food apartheid systems in their communities.
Event Details
In February, the Indiana Uplands Winter Food Conference will present three sessions on updating the narrative about food and farming in Indiana. The sessions center on work that the Hoosier Young Farmers Coalition has been carrying out in recent years.
The first session is the “Food Apartheid Panel.” The facts are that if you’re Black or Latino in this country, you’re much more likely to live in an area where it’s hard to get healthy food—and that’s no accident. It’s systemic racism. At this panel discussion, three BIPOC farmers from the Indianapolis area who are working against the food apartheid systems in their communities will discuss their work. Speakers from the nonprofit farms Flanner Farm and Lawrence Community Gardens will share how they’re empowering youth and creating food security, and a speaker from Garcia’s Gardens, a commercial vegetable farm in Indianapolis, will explore how that organization is building a thriving urban farm. The panel discussion builds on the Hoosier Young Farmers Coalition podcast episode “Food Apartheid.” During the session, presenters will dig deeper into the stories of the farmers in the episode and consider what’s working—and what work is still ahead—in the fight against food apartheid. Listen to the full podcast series here on the Hoosier Young Famers Coalition’s website.
The Indiana Uplands Winter Food Conference is sponsored by the Indiana University Center for Rural Engagement and the Indiana University Food Institute and is co-led with partners from the Indiana Department of Health and the Hoosier Young Farmers Coalition.
