Indiana Humanities will award nearly $50,000 to tax-exempt organizations to develop and implement public programs that promote civic education and help address the civic health challenges that Indiana faces.

Nonprofit organizations across the state are invited to apply for funding that supports programs aimed at fostering civic education for Hoosiers. The grants will provide up to $5,000 to support programs designed to encourage Hoosiers to reflect upon civic participation and engagement.

Funding for the grants, which will be administered by Indiana Humanities, has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of their A More Perfect Union initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to advance civic education and to prepare for the commemoration of the 250th anniversary in 2026 of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The deadline for the A More Perfect Union grant application is October 31. Award notifications will be made in mid-November. Tax-exempt organizations such as schools, public libraries, churches and community or civic organizations are encouraged to apply.

Examples of fundable programs include:

  • Reading-and-discussion programs or community conversations
  • Educational resources, including but not limited to curriculum development or media projects (films, podcasts, etc.)
  • Speakers or panel presentations on relevant topics
  • Exhibitions aiming to inform and engage audiences on relevant topics
  • Oral-history projects

“Commemorations, like American’s upcoming 250th anniversary, give us occasions to reflect on the past, present and future of our nation,” said Megan Telligman director of programs at Indiana Humanities. “We hope that the projects funded by this grant provide Hoosiers with the opportunity to investigate how we participate in the civic activities that make our state, and our nation, what it is today.”
