Celebrate National Arts & Humanities Month at TILT: An Arts & Humanities Mixer

In celebration of National Arts & Humanities Month, Indiana Humanities and the Arts Council of Indianapolis are hosting TILT: An Arts & Humanities Mixer on Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Gallery 924. The event will reinvent the traditional lecture, pairing two experts to discuss two completely different topics followed by a quirky and highly participatory Q&A from the audience.

“Partnering with Indiana Humanities on TILT at Gallery 924 is a great way to celebrate artists and our cultural community, and do so in a fun and engaging way,” said Dave Lawrence, president and CEO of the Arts Council of Indianapolis. “This type of inquisitive exploration of diverse topics is a perfect pairing for our current exhibition by Indy-based artist Barb Stahl, which explores new scientific theories in bold and interesting ways.”

TILT will feature two rounds that pair one arts expert and one humanities expert per round to give a short 10-minute lecture on each topic.

ROUND 1:

Society Pages & Pipe Organs (Cathy Day and Michael Pettry)

Cathy Day, creative writing professor at Ball State University and author of two books: Comeback Season: How I Learned to Play the Game of Love (Free Press, 2008) and The Circus in Winter (Harcourt, 2004), will square off against Michael Pettry, Executive Director of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir and 2015-2016 Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Arts Fellow, in a discussion of music and culture.

ROUND 2:

Warren G. Harding & Flamenco (Ted Frantz and John Alvarado)

Ted Frantz, professor of presidential and political history at the University of Indianapolis and director of the Institute for Civic Leadership and Mayoral Archives will detail the history of Warren G. Harding, while John Alvarado, classical and flamenco guitarist and 2013-2014 Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Arts Fellow, will explain the rhythm of flamenco.

After the brief presentations, the audience will be encouraged to think outside the box, asking questions that relate both topics to each other or that can be answered by both speakers.
