Conversations in Indiana’s African American History

Throughout 2026, Freetown Village presents monthly conversations with historians, researchers, and educators to discuss topics related to Indiana’s Black heritage and deepen our understanding of the African American experience in Indiana, past and present.

August’s program takes a deep dive into the thrilling and complex life of legendary race car driver Charlie Wiggins, retracing his unstoppable passion for racing, examining the barriers he faced in a segregated sport, and celebrating his historic achievements and monumental legacy. Angi Rogers, great-niece of Wiggins, will deliver the presentation, guiding the audience through her family’s remarkable history and her uncle’s enduring impact on motorsports.
