SUMMARY:Story Hour: Hansel and Gretel
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Halloween\, this spooky Story Hour features Stephen King and Maurice Sendak’s haunting retelling of “Hansel and Gretel.” This is a story about fear and courage\, about who to trust and who to doubt\, and about the choices we make when things get desperate. We’ll read together\, then open it up for discussion\, asking what it really means to be brave and how far is too far to go to survive. This version leans into the dark and suspenseful side of the tale\, so it’s best suited for grade-school readers and up. All ages are welcome; adults must stay on the premises with children.

It is a firsthand account of a young person who used his voice to change the country. \nWhat does it take to stand up for what is right? When is a voice enough\, and when does it take a movement? SUMMARY:Voices and Votes Closing Reception featuring Curtis Crisler: Greencastle
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we close Voices and Votes: Democracy in America with an evening of poetry\, music and community. Indiana Poet Laureate Curtis L. Crisler brings his Pop-Up Indiana Chitlin Circuit to the Prindle Institute\, joined by local poets and musicians. Remarks from Indiana Humanities will celebrate six weeks of conversation about democracy\, here in Putnam County and across the nation. This event is made possible by the Putnam County Community Foundation. \nAbout the Pop-Up Indiana Chitlin Circuit\nThe Pop-Up Indiana Chitlin Circuit is an immersive\, communal and joyfully unpredictable poetry experience. It draws its spirit from the historic Chitlin Circuit\, the network of venues that supported and celebrated Black performers during the Jim Crow era. \nThe poets share the mic in a round-robin exchange\, each choosing a poem in the moment in response to the one before it. Solo sets follow\, and the evening ends with the poets reading a single poem together\, line by line. Live music carries the program from one set to the next. \nAbout Curtis L. Crisler\nA Gary native and professor of English at Purdue University Fort Wayne\, Crisler has served as Indiana’s poet laureate since 2024. In January\, his term was extended through the start of 2028. He is the author of 13 books. \n\n
