Presentations will be about 20 minutes long with plenty of time for discussion and Q&A after. \nThe Drag Queens of Indiana Avenue with Stephen Lane \nTalk Description: In 1933\, Indianapolis hosted its first pansy ball with great fanfare in a jazz club along Indiana Avenue. Stephen Lane presents his graduate work at IUPUI in the contributions of LGBTQ+ people to the social and cultural development of Indianapolis. \nBio: Stephen Lane is a librarian who received his Masters in Library and Information Science and a Masters in Public History at IUPUI in 2018. He is passionate about labor history\, LGBTQ+ history and Black history and how those histories intersect and intertwine. He lives in the Haughville neighborhood and serves on the Indianapolis Public Library board of trustees. Presentations will be about 20 minutes long with plenty of time for discussion and Q&A after. \nThe Magic Circle with Deedee Davis \nTalk Description: In October of 1900\, the Fall Festivities Society of Indianapolis promoted a week-long carnival with its central focus being the Magic Circle…Monument Circle was transformed with a dizzying array of attractions\, parades\, performers and animals all in the glow of “electric illuminations.” Yet\, despite all the enchantment\, the Magic Circle Carnival was a one-time marvel in Indianapolis’ history. \nBio: Deedee Davis is a Herron-Morton resident with an interest in Indianapolis history\, specifically historic residential architecture and Greenlawn Cemetery. Presentations will be about 20 minutes long with plenty of time for discussion and Q&A after. \nMaking\, Keeping\, and Poeting a Place with Kevin McKelvey \nTalk Description: This program will give a brief overview of creative placemaking and placekeeping and discuss the importance of place in the poetry of James Whitcomb Riley\, Mari Evans\, and Etheridge Knight. \nBio: Kevin McKelvey is a place-based poet\, writer\, designer\, and social practice artist who also teaches at University of Indianapolis. His poems have appeared widely in journals\, books\, and as pieces of public art. McKelvey currently serves on the board of Central Indiana Land Trust and regularly consults on grants\, placemaking\, professional writing\, and creative writing. \nAbout: Circle Side Chats is in partnership with Big Car Collaborative and SPARK. Presentations will be about 20 minutes long with plenty of time for discussion and Q&A after. \nPreserving Hoosier Black Heritage with Eunice Trotter \nTalk Description: This talk focuses on the work being done by the Indiana Landmarks Black Heritage Preservation Program to uncover\, document and preserve Black heritage\, both with and without physical sites. Audiences will receive a significant overview of Hoosier history and the role of African Americans in that history. \nBio: Eunice Trotter holds journalism undergraduate degrees and an MBA. She was the owner of The Indianapolis Recorder\, the first African American editor at The Indianapolis Star and held editing or reporting positions at several other newspapers\, including The New York Post\, Florida Today\, The Palm Beach Post and The Lafayette Journal and Courier. She was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame. She recently published her first book\, Black in Indiana\, which has received state and national first-place awards. Eunice is now director of Indiana Landmark’s Black Heritage Preservation Program. Her job and her passion are to uncover\, document and preserve Black heritage statewide.  \nAbout: Circle Side Chats is in partnership with Big Car Collaborative and SPARK. Poems will additionally be shared. \nBio: Norman Minnick is the author of three collections of poetry and editor of several anthologies. Most recently\, he is the editor of The Indianapolis Anthology and The Lost Etheridge: Uncollected Poems of Etheridge Knight. His poems and essays have been published in The Georgia Review\, The Sun\, World Literature Today\, The Writer’s Chronicle\, Oxford American\, and New World Writing\, among others. Presentations will be about 20 minutes long with plenty of time for discussion and Q&A after. \nA Grave Matter in Indiana: Cemeteries and Hoosiers with Jeannie Regan-Dinius \nTalk Description: Before most of any city was developed\, the first thing our pioneers established was burial grounds.  Whether a family site\, religious based\, or community focused these essential spaces evolved in importance\, design\, and use. This Spark will explore the city’s relationship with these places. \nBio: Jeannie R. Regan-Dinius\, Director of Special Initiatives\, has a life-long interest in history\, family history\, and research. She earned her Bachelors in Public History from Ball State University\, where she studied also anthropology and American Studies. She has her Masters in Urban Planning and Information Management/Library Science from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.   \nShe is the Director of Historic Preservation for the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation\, a role she started in 2022. Before that\, she worked as the Cemetery and Burial Ground Registry Coordinator for the State of Indiana. Presentations will be about 20 minutes long with plenty of time for discussion and Q&A after. \nThe Doctor and the Canals: Dr. Isaac Coe and the Bankrupting of Indiana with Ed Fujawa \nTalk Description: Learn more about the early history of Indianapolis’s canal system—an ambitious project that nearly doomed a fledgling state and created a legacy still evident when you walk the streets of Indianapolis today.   \nBio: Ed Fujawa is an attorney with the Indiana Department of Insurance and in his spare time\, an Indianapolis historian. His authors a blog dedicated to the history of the Circle City\, www.class900indy.com His first history book about the city\, Vanished Indianapolis\, explores the history of lost sites across the city. When he is not researching local history\, Ed enjoys being a subpar fisherman and going kayaking on the White River and Fall Creek.  \nAbout: Circle Side Chats is in partnership with Big Car Collaborative and SPARK.
