SUMMARY:"'Teaching Freedom and Unfreedom': Teaching the Coffins and the Underground Railroad" Educator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow educators to learn how Levi and Catharine Coffin were instrumental in creating one of the most successful safehouses on the Underground Railroad in Indiana through a guided tour of the Coffin home. Discover how to use the experiences of the Coffins to teach about the Underground Railroad through a provided curriculum\, which includes one primary and one secondary resource for the classroom. Listen to local writer Randall Wisehart speak about his young adult novel Luke’s Summer Secret (historical fiction that features the Coffins) and how to incorporate it into lesson plans. \nThis program is recommended for educators in grades 3 to 8. \nTo register\, click on the RSVP link above. \nFor more information\, visit the Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site website\, email LeviCoffinCenter@indianamuseum.org\, or call 765.847.1691. \nThis program received support from an Indiana Humanities Action Grant.

SUMMARY:William Bush's Journey to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Join Levi and Catharine Coffin House volunteer Eileen Baker-Wall as she uses an object from her family to tell the story of her great-great grandfather William Bush. Bush\, a freedom-seeker who escaped enslavement\, came to Fountain City in the 1840s where he became a business and landowner and was known as the “captain” of the Underground Railroad efforts in town. Site Manager Joanna Hahn will provide participants with connections between the story of William Bush and Tiya Miles’ book All That She Carried. \nProgram registration is required and available at this link or by calling 765.847.1691. \nNote: This event is part of Indiana Humanities’ Advancing Racial Equity Community Read program.
