SUMMARY:Celebrating Naomi Anderson Kickoff Event
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, as part of the Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial\, the Michigan City Mainstreet Association received a Preserving Women’s Legacy Grant from Indiana Humanities and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. The association is using grant funds to create a public sculpture and a series of programs that honor Naomi Anderson\, an African American poet and suffragist born in Michigan City in 1843. \nAt this kickoff event\, the association will introduce Bernard Williams\, the artist who will create the sculpture honoring Anderson (to be unveiled this fall). Other activities will include a spoken-word performance\, poems inspired by Anderson and more. \nDoors open at 5 p.m.\, with remarks at 5:30 p.m. and a mix-and-mingle until 6:30 p.m. (Note that Michigan City is on Central Daylight Time.) Light refreshments will be served.
