DESCRIPTION:The Jeffersonville committee of the American Friends of Lafayette joins with the Jeffersonville Township Public Library to host a presentation by New York Times\, USA Today\, and Wall Street Journal best-selling author Stephanie Dray. Dray’s presentation is part of an event series to mark the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Jeffersonville\, Indiana. Among the truest believers in the principles of the American Revolution\, Lafayette left a life of wealth and prestige in France to repeatedly risk his life and fortune to promote liberty and equality in the Americas and Europe. His work would not have been possible without the political savvy\, financial management\, and dauntless courage of Madame Lafayette\, the general’s wife Adrienne. \nIn her talk\, Dray will explore the legacy of the Marquis de Lafayette and the remarkable women in his life\, drawing on her latest novel\, The Women of Chateau Lafayette\, to delve into the Marquis and Madame Lafayette’s role in the American Revolution\, the French Revolution\, and beyond. SUMMARY:Hope Is a Duty: The Revolutionary Life of Adrienne Lafayette
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Jeffersonville\, Indiana\, the Jeffersonville chapter of the American Friends of Lafayette is partnering with community organizations to present a series of public programs. This presentation will focus on the life of Adrienne Lafayette\, the Marquis de Lafayette’s wife\, from her marriage in 1774 to her death in 1807. In three segments—during the American Revolution\, the French Revolution\, and time spent at chateau La Grange in Olmütz—the presentation will show how Adrienne challenged conventional mores and roles for women. Adrienne’s involvement in her husband’s political life was crucial to the pivotal revolutions of the 18th century. On a personal level\, her courage\, strength\, and ingenuity saved Lafayette’s life\, their son’s life\, and their family’s future in France. Award-winning author Kathryn Goodwin Tone will deliver the presentation\, focusing on research for her forthcoming biography of Adrienne. Tone is the winner of a 2020 National Indie Excellence Award and a finalist in the 2022 Young Adult Virginia Author Awards. DESCRIPTION:The Jeffersonville Township Public Library hosts a presentation by Chuck Schwam\, executive director of the American Friends of Lafayette\, as part of an event series to mark the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Jeffersonville\, Indiana. Among the truest believers in the principles of the American Revolution\, Lafayette left a world of wealth and prestige in France to risk his life and fortune to promote liberty and equality in the Americas and Europe. Throughout his life\, Lafayette was known for his generous spirit: he clothed the men who fought with him during the American Revolution and fed the hungry during a famine in France\, among other deeds. Schwam will focus specifically on Lafayette’s generosity\, commitment to abolishing slavery\, and views on the equality of Native Americans. DESCRIPTION:Mike Gibson\, who is both an artist and naturalist at the Falls of the Ohio\, will teach the basic fundamentals of sketching using both charcoal and newsprint.  Each participant will be encouraged to draw an animal\, plant\, or insect\, that they related to as a child; similar in a way one might say to Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s own experience with nature.

SUMMARY:Communal Places and Neglected Spaces: Exploring Indiana's Roadside Springs
DESCRIPTION:Roadside springs are sites where geography\, history\, and public health intersect. Join artist and folklorist Kay Westhues as she examines several historic springs in Indiana by sharing oral histories\, photographs\, and archival research. She explores why some springs still function as communal spaces for water gathering\, while others have fallen out of our collective memory. In the process\, she’ll address issues of water access and environmental justice. \nKay Westhues is interested in examining the ways in which rural tradition and history are interpreted and transformed in the present day. Her research interests include environmentalism and water rights\, the public commons\, oral history\, and the cultural significance of place. Kay received her M.A. in Folk Studies from Western Kentucky University and teaches at the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at Indiana University South Bend and the University of Saint Francis. \nThis event was made possible by a grant from Indiana Humanities.
