SUMMARY:White Supremacy and Environmental Inequalities
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Benjamin will begin with a brief history of white supremacy and its origins on the North American continent\, beginning from the period of colonization and enslavement. Benjamin then demonstrates how these legacies shape many of the social issues facing our country today\, including relationships to the environment. Looking at how the power of the state shapes and enforces environmental policy\, Benjamin helps audiences see how\, due to systemic racism\, Black and Brown communities have been disproportionately negatively impacted by pollution\, climate change and natural disasters. After this presentation\, Benjamin will open up space for participants to discuss environmental racism and its effects on their lives and communities \nBenjamin Clark has been working as a public historian for more than a decade. He holds a master’s degree in public history and is pursuing a PhD in American Studies\, both at IUPUI. He is currently a graduate research assistant at the IUPUI Arts & Humanities Institute where he is working on a project called the Anthropocene Household.
