SUMMARY:Campfires: Chellberg Farmhouse (Indiana Dunes National Park)
DESCRIPTION:We’ll start this Campfires program at the Chellberg Farmhouse near the town of Porter in the Indiana Dunes National Park. At the Chellberg Farmhouse\, we’ll learn the story of the Swedish-American family that settled the farm in the late 1800s. We’ll then walk to the Bailly Homestead\, established by French-Canadian fur trader Joseph Bailly in the 1830s. The homestead\, which is designated as a National Historic Landmark\, features a main house with late-19th-century architectural detail\, rustic log and brick structures and an unusual family cemetery. As we travel between the two sites\, we’ll explore the surrounding environment unique to Indiana Dunes National Park. \nThe trek will be co-led by a Hoosier humanities scholar as well as a ranger from the park. In addition to exploring the two historic sites\, we’ll stop to read short works by nature writers. The trek will conclude with a shared discussion around a campfire. \nPlease note that while this program is free as part of a special partnership with Indiana Dunes National Park\, you’ll need to pay admission to the park. For information about park fees\, visit the Indiana Dunes National Park website. \nWHERE: Chellberg Farmnouse (Indiana Dunes National Park) \nWHEN: July 13\, 2024\, 9 –11 a.m. CDT \nSCHOLAR-FACILITATOR: TBD \nTRAIL DIFFICULTY: Easy to moderate \nTHINGS TO KEEP IN MIND \n\nA limited number of free tickets are available based on need; please contact Sam Opsahl at sopsahl@indianahumanities.org.\nDepending on the weather\, some trails may be wet\, so wear shoes that can handle the mud.\nPlease bring a reuseable water bottle to take with you on the outing.\nWe’ll send a final confirmation two days before the event with driving and parking instructions and any other updates.\nIn case of inclement weather\, Indiana Humanities will cancel the event and alert you via email at least two hours prior to the event start time. If the event is canceled\, we’ll offer a refund or a ticket to another Campfires event of your choice.\nThis event is designed for ages 12 and older.\nRefunds are not available after 72 hours in advance (unless Indiana Humanities cancels the event).\n\nABOUT CAMPFIRES \nIndiana Humanities’ award-winning Campfires program pairs nature and literature to spark conversations about Indiana’s future. Something about the combination of wild places\, great writing and a warm campfire gets Hoosiers talking in fresh and surprising ways about the world around us and our place in it. \nABOUT INDIANA HUMANITIES \nIndiana Humanities connects people\, opens minds and enriches lives by creating and facilitating programs that encourage Hoosiers to think\, read and talk. \nABOUT INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK \nStretching along 15 miles of the southern shore of Lake Michigan\, Indiana Dunes National Park offers an incredible diversity of habitats and visitor experiences. Beyond the sandy beaches\, visitors can explore rugged dunes\, quiet forests and tranquil wetlands along 50 miles of hiking trails. World-class birding and over 1\,100 native plant species makes this 15\,000 acre park among the most biologically rich in the nation. \nIndiana Humanities will make reasonable modifications to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy our programs. If you need an accommodation\, please email Sam Opsahl at sopsahl@indianahumanities.org. \nIndiana Humanities takes photos and video at its events. These photos and video may appear on the Indiana Humanities website and in promotional materials. Your attendance at this event indicates your consent to have your image photographed and/or videotaped\, as well as your permission to be interviewed\, if appropriate.
