SUMMARY:Unequal and Undaunted: Education and Community at Lincoln School for Colored Children
DESCRIPTION:Crawfordsville’s Carnegie Museum hosts through late December the exhibition Unequal and Undaunted: Education and Community at Lincoln School for Colored Children. The Lincoln School\, which operated from 1881 until 1947 in two different buildings that are now demolished\, served both as a place of elementary education and as a gathering place for the Black community in Crawfordsville. The exhibition draws on research presented in the newly published book To Remember the Forgotten School: The Story of the Lincoln School for Colored Children by Shannon Sullivan Hudson and Vicke Hudson Swisher. Both the exhibition and the book tell the stories of the educators\, students and caretakers whose lives centered around the school and of the community’s struggle to educate all children. \nThe exhibition is open during the museum’s regular hours\, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nFor more information\, visit the museum’s website or email carnegie@cdpl.lib.in.us. \nThis program received support from an Indiana Humanities Action Grant.
