SUMMARY:"'Teaching Freedom and Unfreedom': Teaching the Coffins and the Underground Railroad" Educator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow educators to learn how Levi and Catharine Coffin were instrumental in creating one of the most successful safehouses on the Underground Railroad in Indiana through a guided tour of the Coffin home. Discover how to use the experiences of the Coffins to teach about the Underground Railroad through a provided curriculum\, which includes one primary and one secondary resource for the classroom. SUMMARY:William Bush's Journey to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Join Levi and Catharine Coffin House volunteer Eileen Baker-Wall as she uses an object from her family to tell the story of her great-great grandfather William Bush. Bush\, a freedom-seeker who escaped enslavement\, came to Fountain City in the 1840s where he became a business and landowner and was known as the “captain” of the Underground Railroad efforts in town. SUMMARY:White Supremacy and Environmental Racism
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Benjamin Clark of IUPUI will begin with a brief history of white supremacy and its origins on the North American continent\, beginning from the period of colonization and enslavement. Benjamin then demonstrates how these legacies shape many of the social issues facing our country today\, including relationships to the environment. Looking at how the power of the state shapes and enforces environmental policy\, Benjamin helps audiences see how\, due to systemic racism\, Black and Brown communities have been disproportionately negatively impacted by pollution\, climate change and natural disasters. After this presentation\, Benjamin will open up space for participants to discuss environmental racism and its effects on their lives and communities.

SUMMARY:Redeeming Uncle Tom: The Josiah Henson Story
DESCRIPTION:Redeeming Uncle Tom: The Josiah Henson Story is a ground-breaking documentary that restores Josiah Henson\, a hero of the abolitionist movement\, to his rightful place in history. Henson overcame incredible odds to escape from slavery with his wife and children. He served as the inspiration for the title character in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s classic 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. \nAfter viewing of the documentary\, audience members will hear from author Jared Brock. Brock wrote The Road to Dawn\, a biography of Henson that traces his escape from slavery and his work as an abolitionist. Brock will lead lead a discussion on Henson’s life and the impact of the Uncle Tom character.
