SUMMARY:Progressive Preservation Talks: Joyner and Ostroff with First Christian Church Tour
DESCRIPTION:Landmark Columbus Foundation presents a “Progressive Preservation Talk” with Louis Joyner\, AIA\, and Daniel Ostroff\, featuring information about Columbus’s iconic First Christian Church. \nJoyner\, a Columbus-based architect\, will share his work and involvement with the First Christian Church’s Save Our Tower project. Ostroff\, head of acquisitions and research at the Eames Institute and consultant to the Eames Office\, will talk about the connections and history of Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen–designed furniture at First Christian Church. \nThe program begins at Helen Haddad Hall with a reception at 1:00 p.m. followed by the public talk. After the talk\, at 3:30 p.m.\, participants will head across the street for a tour of First Christian Church and a discussion about the Save our Tower project. SUMMARY:2022 Exhibit Columbus Symposium: Public by Design
DESCRIPTION:Join Landmark Columbus Foundation for the 2022 Exhibit Columbus Symposium: Public by Design. \nIn a format designed to inspire engagement from communities within Columbus\, around the state and far beyond\, the two-day event will feature sessions with the J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize recipients\, university design research fellows\, a high school design team\, graphic designers\, curators\, three inspiring keynote speakers and others. \nDay two of thesymposium begins at Columbus City Hall (123 Washington St.) with a keynote conversation with Rachel Kaplan-David\, the director of the Chicago Architectural Biennial\, and Jenny Gil Schmitz\, the executive director of Desert X—two of the country’s leading cultural programs that create site responsive art and architecture installations. The conversation will be moderated by Rasul Mowatt\, department head of parks\, recreation and tourism management at North Carolina State University. Sessions will continue throughout the day with the university design research fellows in conversation with James Lima Planning + Development\, a leading urban strategy consultancy. \n2022–23 University Design Research Fellows \n\nJoseph Altshuler (School of Architecture at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign) and Zack Morrison (Chicago)\nEsteban Garcia Bravo and Maria Clara Morales (Department of Computer Graphics Technology at Purdue University\, West Lafayette\, Ind.)\nJessica Colangelo and Charles Sharpless (University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design\, Fayetteville)\nDeborah Garcia (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Architecture\, Cambridge)\nMolly Hunker and Greg Corso (Syracuse University School of Architecture\, Syracuse\, N.Y.)\nKatie MacDonald and Kyle Schumann (University of Virginia School of Architecture\, Charlottesville)\nHalina Steiner\, Tameka Baba\, Forbes Lipschitz (Austin E. Miller Prize recipients\, university design research fellows\, a high school design team\, graphic designers\, curators\, three inspiring keynote speakers and others. \nDay one of the symposium kicks off at the Commons (300 Washington St.) with a keynote presentation from Trinity Simons Wagner\, the executive director of the Mayor’s Institute on City Design. She’ll talk about the importance of mayors being the chief urban designers of their cities and the recently launched Just City Mayoral Fellowship. \nThe day will continue with two types of sessions that will run at the same time: \n\nEXPLORE sessions will allow you to visit the site at which each Miller Prize recipient is paired during this cycle of Exhibit Columbus.\nCONNECT sessions will take place at the Commons and allow you to hear from each Miller Prize recipient and learn about the history\, community and design challenge for each site.\n\nThe day culminates in a keynote conversation with all of the Miller Prize participants moderated by Julie McClure\, editor of The Republic newspaper\, who has more than twenty years of experience writing for Indiana papers. \n2022-23 J. DESCRIPTION:Five years ago the film Columbus arrived on the big screen\, once again catapulting the city of Columbus into the national spotlight.
