SUMMARY:THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION  Screening & Discussion (Merrillville)
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, a screening of the new PBS documentary “The American Revolution” will be shown. The program will feature clips from the longer 12-part series\, followed by a moderated panel discussion to explore service as a core American value – examining volunteerism\, civic participation\, public leadership\, and more. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis program has been made possible by Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations\, Lakeshore Public Media\, and Indiana Humanities\, with special thanks to the Lake County Public Libraries. The American Revolution\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside down. \nCorporate funding for THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION was provided by Bank of America. The program will feature clips from the longer 12-part series\, followed by facilitated table conversations. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis program has been made possible by Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations\, Lakeshore Public Media\, and Indiana Humanities\, with special thanks to Valparaiso University.  \n  \nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY  \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. It declared American independence with promises that we continue to strive for. SUMMARY:Walkable USA Public Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join the Center for Independent Documentary\, House Painter Media and Lakeshore Public Media for a public screening of Walkable USA\, a documentary about the efforts to reinvigorate historic downtown Hammond\, Indiana\, through walkable urban design and historic preservation. The film’s creators will be on hand for a post-screening discussion. \nClick on the RSVP button above to register. \nNote that the program begins at 6 p.m. Central Daylight Time. \nFor more information\, contact House Painter Media at tom@housepaintermedia.com. \nAbout the Film\n \nIn the late 20th and early 21st century\, downtown Hammond\, Indiana\, once a thriving commercial and civic center\, was all but abandoned. Fast forward to the 2020s\, and the community sees a path forward to revitalize an area that was once a point of civic pride. To do so\, they’ve enlisted the help of city planner and urban designer Jeff Speck. Speck\, along with his mentors Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk\, is considered one of the leading voices of New Urbanism\, a movement which promotes alternatives to suburban sprawl and urban disinvestment. \nCentral to Speck’s design philosophy is the power of people walking. His work aims to shift the design and scale of cities from the car to the individual. These changes result in safer streets\, and in older “legacy” communities they can help reinvigorate neighborhoods where many could not imagine such transformations taking place. Walkable USA explores the impact of city planning on our society\, and the film uses Hammond as an in-progress case study of a possible solution to years of car-centric design. \nTo preview the film\, watch this clip.
