SUMMARY:THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION  Screening & Discussion (Merrillville)
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, a screening of the new PBS documentary “The American Revolution” will be shown. The program will feature clips from the longer 12-part series\, followed by a moderated panel discussion to explore service as a core American value – examining volunteerism\, civic participation\, public leadership\, and more. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis program has been made possible by Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations\, Lakeshore Public Media\, and Indiana Humanities\, with special thanks to the Lake County Public Libraries. The American Revolution\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside down. \nCorporate funding for THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION was provided by Bank of America. SUMMARY:NANORIMO Prep Workshop With Larry Sweazy
DESCRIPTION:Here’s the big secret about writing novels: the hardest part of writing a novel is finishing it. The day-by-day grind it takes to write a novel can be overwhelming. Great ideas tire out. Real life gets in the way. Doubt overtakes the dream. In this interactive workshop\, Larry D. Sweazy will share proven tips and help beginning and seasoned writers alike\, to build the skills that they need to finish that special novel. Topics discussed will be time management\, building a toolbox\, finding support\, writing tips\, and most importantly living life as a writer\, even if they’re not published. Students should come prepared to write in class. Exercises include determining how many words can be written in a sitting\, character creation\, designing titles\, writing query letters\, and submission techniques. This workshop is designed to jumpstart a writer’s dream and turn it into a happy reality. \nThis workshop is made possible by a grant through Indiana Humanities. Larry D. Sweazy will conduct this workshop through Zoom. Patrons can join us at Munster Branch to watch the Zoom presentation or join through Zoom with a computer\, laptop\, or phone. DESCRIPTION:Join Lake County Public Library as it hosts Dr. Tony Jean Dickerson of the Advancing Racial Equity Speakers Bureau. Dr. Dickerson will present her talk Black Quilters: Hard Topics\, Soft Blows. \nArts hold a vital place of importance in our society. Quilts\, often seen as “women’s work” and “sheer arts and crafts” by some\, actually have a prominent place in telling the struggles and triumphs of many cultures. Moreover\, the African American community has fought to tell its stories and quilts have been used as an important vehicle to tell these stories. From individuals and guilds alike\, the artistry of African American quilters can no longer be denied as frontrunners of the quilting scene. \nDr. Tony Jean Dickerson (she/her) was born and raised in Indianapolis\, Indiana\, and has earned degrees from Lincoln University\, University of Central Missouri\, and University of Missouri-Kansas City. In 2019\, after a successful thirty-year career in education she earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Kansas. She returned home in 2017 and became the lead faculty for Martin University’s School of Education’s Teacher Preparation Program in June of 2022. Besides teaching\, Dr. Dickerson is a nationally recognized quilter and is a member of 8 local and national quilt guilds including the founding president of the Akoma Ntoso Modern Quilt Guild of Central Indiana. \nNote: This event is part of Indiana Humanities’ Advancing Racial Equity Community Read program.

SUMMARY:Happy 5th Birthday: Hair Discrimination Has No Age Limits
DESCRIPTION:Dove USA reported\, Black girls begin experiencing race-based hair\ndiscrimination due to wearing protective hairstyles (braids\, afros\, locs\, and\ntwists) at age 5. Further\, a majority (54%) of Black women alter their\ntextured hair to secure employment. Historic and current hair biases and\ndiscriminations will be presented with vibrant images\, physical examples\,\nand data. Additionally\, black women’s and girls’ hair narratives will be\nshared to illustrate the lived experiences of hair politics. Ideally\, attendees\nwill leave with an understanding of how responses to Black/African\nAmerican hair texture has and continues to perpetuate racism\n(internalized\, systematic\, and/or institutional) in America. \nThose who wish to attend should register through the library’s link listed above\, or call 219-769-3541. \nJantina Anderson (she/her) is an Indiana University – Indianapolis\ndoctoral candidate. Her research centers Black girls’ and women’s\naesthetic choices\, sense of belonging in institutional and corporate spaces\,\nand resulting identity\, agency\, and success implications. Jantina’s work has\nbeen presented at various national conferences and published in\nacademic journals. Additionally\, she is a Fortune 500 HR Director\, and a\nproud alumna of Clark Atlanta University and Michigan State University.\nOutside of her pursuits\, Jantina cherishes quality time with her husband and\ntwo daughters while residing in the Indianapolis\, Indiana area.
