SUMMARY:Afrofuture Fridays: Past Is Future
DESCRIPTION:Afrofuturism is a framework to critique the present that’s rooted in Black history and culture as it dreams of possible futures. For the Kheprw Institute\, having an Afrofuturist lens represents a public statement of the attitude and mindset of the organization and community\, about creating desired future states in the present by constantly reimagining the work and the way the community moves through the world. \nJoin Kheprw for an exploration on the powerful history of the Norwood community and Indiana Avenue\, what it looks like to investigate our past as a way to interrogate our collective identity\, and possible pathways forward. Guests are Kaila Austin\, an artist\, public historian and community activist who trains historically African American communities on how to mobilize their histories to save their ancestral spaces in the face of gentrification\, and Wildstyle Paschall\, a writer\, photographer\, musician and editor who has worked with many community groups on initiatives from community gardens to community art projects to affordable housing. \nTo join this virtual conversation\, register at the RSVP link above. \nFor more information\, contact the Kheprw Institute at info@kheprw.org or 317.329.4803 ext. 3. \nThis program received support from an INcommon Grant\, offered through Indiana Humanities and the Indianapolis Foundation\, a CICF affiliate.

SUMMARY:Remixing the Future: Hip Hop as Afrofuturism\, Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Afrofuturism in music is largely discussed through the history and influence of Sun Ra and Parliament-Funkadelic. However\, that lens intersecting Black culture with technology and liberation can be felt across music genres and is very much a part of hip hop. From conscious rap to artists like Andre3000/Outkast\, from Digable Planets to Flying Lotus\, from Missy Elliot to Janelle Monae\, hip hop has been navigating the future for a while. \nJoin award-winning writer and editor Sheree Renee Thomas and writer-teacher Danian Darrell Jerry as they discuss the role of hip hop in Afrofuturism. \nThis program will take place virtually\, and we’ll post an RSVP link once registration opens. \nFor more information\, contact the Kheprw Institute at info@kheprw.org or 317.329.4803 ext. 3. \nThis program received support from an INcommon Grant\, offered through Indiana Humanities and the Indianapolis Foundation\, a CICF affiliate.
