SUMMARY:Confronting Our Legacy of Redlining
DESCRIPTION:Please join Center for Inquiry at School 84\, one of the Indianapolis Public Schools International Baccalaureate schools\, to host Mark Latta. Mark will present his talk\, Confronting Our Legacy of Redlining. \nRedlining\, the practice of denying mortgages and home ownership on the\nbasis of race\, was a national policy that formally segregated metropolitan\nneighborhoods across the United States and targeted predominately Black\ncommunities for disinvestment\, dispossession\, and denial of services. Although\nformally outlawed\, the legacy of redlining continues to impact neighborhoods\nthrough poverty\, violence\, and a public health crisis of premature death. This\npresentation defines redlining\, discusses its historical origins\, and identifies how\nit continues to inscribe itself in urban geographies. Copies of original redlined\nmaps will be shared\, and resources will be offered on challenging the legacy\nof redlining. \nMark Latta (he/him)\, an assistant professor of English at Marian University\,\ndeveloped the university’s community engaged learning program. He\ncollaborates extensively with The Learning Tree\, an association of neighbors in\nthe Indianapolis Near Northwest that focuses on social change through\nasset-based community development. His research and teaching interests\nfocus on the intersections between community engagement\, unwinding racism\nand colonialism\, and the ways literacy is used to resist oppression and enact\nfutures. Latta gained his first experience teaching through an AmeriCorps term\nof service at Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility and remains involved in\ncarceral education as a Women’s College Partnership faculty member.
