SUMMARY:For Whose Protection?: Black Women and Confinement in the Late-19th Century
DESCRIPTION:This talk illuminates the lives of confined Black women by examining places\nlike jails\, prisons\, mental health asylums\, and – a site not typically\nconsidered confining – the home and related domestic spaces. Dr. Fletcher explores how Black women defied and defined confinement through their\ninteractions with public\, social\, and political entities of the period and how\nthey challenged Victorian ideas of race and femininity in the late 19th\ncentury. \nThis event will be a traditional lecture with a 50 min lecture and 30 mins for Q&A from the audience. There is no pre-registration. There is plenty of parking at the Health Pavilion\, which has no restrictions in the evening. \nCharlene J. Fletcher (she/her) is an assistant professor of history at Butler University. She holds a Ph.D. in History from Indiana University\,\nspecializing in 19th-century United States and African American history\nand gender studies. Before returning to Indiana\, Charlene led a domestic\nviolence/sexual assault program and one of the most significant prison\nreentry initiatives in New York City\, assisting women and men in\ntransitioning from incarceration to society. Charlene’s first book\, Confined\nFemininity: Race\, Gender\, and Incarceration in Kentucky\, 1865-1920\, is\nunder contract with the University of North Carolina Press.
