SUMMARY:"Upstream\, Downstream: Sharing the Watershed"
DESCRIPTION:“How do my actions positively or negatively affect the ways other people interact with the watershed?” \nWe ask a lot of our watersheds. We expect them to provide drinking water and remove wastewater\, support industry\, store groundwater\, and drain farm fields\, paved streets and parking lots. Do we consider how\, in our daily living\, we contribute to the health or destruction of these living systems? \nIn this talk\, Phillip Anderson\, ReThink Consulting and IUPUI\, encourages attendees to consider this question in their own life and locality: “How do my actions affect the ways other people interact with the watershed?” This presentation will introduce new ways of thinking about this topic. \n“Upstream\, Downstream” is being held during Angola’s hosting of Water/Ways. Visit the library’s website for more information. \n

SUMMARY:"Indiana: The Everglades of the North"
DESCRIPTION:How does learning about the landscape of Indiana’s past\, along with the attitudes\, beliefs\, and actions that modified that landscape\, help us understand current issues impacting the environment? \nNancy Germano\, Instructor of History\, Butler University\, will explore the history of Indiana’s swamps and wetlands with both literary and archival examples of lake and swamp drainage\, ditch digging\, and limestone excavation. This talk challenges participants’ understanding of Indiana’s landscape\, while asking us to consider not only current issues (e.g.\, wetland conservation\, economic progress\, and flooding) but also how we make future decisions about our local environments. \n“Indiana: The Everglades of the North” is being held during Angola’s hosting of Water/Ways. Visit the library’s website for more information.

SUMMARY:“Living on Indigenous Landscapes: Potawatomi and Settler Histories in Northern Indiana”
DESCRIPTION:Who were the Indigenous peoples who lived on the land where we live today and how can we respond to the injustices that caused them to lose this land? \nDr. Luke Gascho\, Executive Director\, Emeritus – Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College\, will discuss interactions between the Potawatomi people and settlers in northern Indiana. During his talk\, insights will be shared regarding the framework that gave governments moral and legal justifications to invade Indigenous lands and dominate and force removal of Indigenous peoples. \nThe presentation will also cover what the continent was like before 1492\, insights into the interactions between Indigenous peoples and settlers in Elkhart County\, Indiana\, and current actions that can lead to right relationships between people and the land. \n“Living on Indigenous Landscapes” is being held during Angola’s hosting of Water/Ways. Visit the library’s website for more information.

SUMMARY:Water/Ways Indiana Tour: Angola
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Carnegie Public Library of Steuben County in Angola to see Water/Ways! Please visit the library’s website to confirm visitation times and guidelines. \nThe Smithsonian’s Water/Ways exhibition dives into water–an essential component of life on our planet\, environmentally\, culturally\, and historically. \nIn societies across the globe\, water serves as a source of peace and contemplation. Many faiths revere water as a sacred symbol. Authors and artists are inspired by the complex character of water–a substance that is seemingly soft and graceful that is yet a powerful and nearly unstoppable force. \nWater also plays a practical role in American society. The availability of water affected settlement and migration patterns. Access to water and control of water resources have long been a central part of political and economic planning. Human creativity and resourcefulness provide new ways of protecting water resources and renewing respect for the natural environment.
