DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, a screening of the new PBS documentary “The American Revolution” will be shown. The program will feature clips from the longer 12-part series\, followed by a moderated panel discussion to explore service as a core American value – examining volunteerism\, civic participation\, public leadership\, and more. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis program has been made possible by Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations\, Lakeshore Public Media\, and Indiana Humanities\, with special thanks to the Lake County Public Libraries. DESCRIPTION:History meets hip hop under the stars. \nJoin La Porte County Parks and Recreation for a special Hamilton Trivia Night and Movies in the Park event. This free public program celebrates America’s 250th anniversary with a fresh\, modern take on the nation’s founding story. \nTrivia begins at 7:30 p.m.\, followed by a screening of Hamilton at dusk. \nBefore the film\, attendees can take part in a live Hamilton-themed trivia experience led by Purdue University Northwest professors Dr. Joseph Cochran and Dr. Yu (Yo) Ouyang. Participants will play in teams as they explore the real people\, events\, and ideas behind the musical through an engaging and interactive format designed for a broad public audience. No prior knowledge of history is required. \nTeams are encouraged to pre-register for a chance to participate in the trivia experience and to be entered into a door prize drawing. DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition\, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America\, will continue its tour of Indiana at the Love Community Center in Rushville where it will be on display from July 5-Aug. 16\, 2026. The exhibition gives an in-depth look on America’s democracy and brings discussions about democracy to local communities. Host organizations will present a companion exhibition and series of programs in their communities during the exhibit’s six-week visit. \nThe exhibition will be open during Love Community Center normal operating hours: \nMonday-Friday: 5 am-9 pm\nSaturday: 7 am-5 pm\nSunday: 12 pm-5 pm \nThe exhibit will tour the seven small towns across Indiana during the Semiquincentennial\, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. Enjoy hands on activities\, live music\, educational demos\, guided tours\, and more! \nAt 2 pm\, Indiana Humanities\, Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations and WTIU/WFIU will host a special screening of clips from the new PBS docuseries THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. After the screening\, attendees are encouraged to visit the History Center’s exhibition of Monroe County Revolutionary War veterans. \nThis screening\, and all the block party activities are free and open to the public. \nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY  \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. It declared American independence with promises that we continue to strive for. Each Center for the Book Affiliate will staff a booth in the Festival’s Roadmap to Reading area to promote reading\, libraries and literacy in their state. Annually\, these Affiliated Centers for the Book select “Great Reads from Great Places.” Each affiliate chooses two titles. In most cases\, these books—one for youth and one for adults—are written by authors from their state or territory\, take place in their state or territory and/or celebrate local culture and heritage. In addition\, this year\, in honor of America’s 250th Semiquincentennial\, affiliate centers were encouraged to choose a title that connects to that theme in some way. SUMMARY:Discovering Oxford: Downtown Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Discover Oxford for a guided historic walking tour of the Oxford town square. Adapted from research by local historian Mary Cross\, the tour will explore the buildings\, businesses\, and people that shaped Oxford’s downtown. \nParticipants will receive a complimentary booklet featuring a detailed map\, numbered stops\, historic information\, and additional sites beyond those covered during the guided walk. The booklet is designed so visitors can continue exploring the town square at their own pace and return for a self-guided tour in the future. \nThe tour begins at 6 p.m. at the Prairie Victorian\, formerly the Messner Building (110 S. DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2026\, Freetown Village presents monthly conversations with historians\, researchers\, and educators to discuss topics related to Indiana’s Black heritage and deepen our understanding of the African American experience in Indiana\, past and present. \nAugust’s program takes a deep dive into the thrilling and complex life of legendary race car driver Charlie Wiggins\, retracing his unstoppable passion for racing\, examining the barriers he faced in a segregated sport\, and celebrating his historic achievements and monumental legacy. Angi Rogers\, great-niece of Wiggins\, will deliver the presentation\, guiding the audience through her family’s remarkable history and her uncle’s enduring impact on motorsports. \nThe event\, which includes a question-and-answer session\, will be presented both in person and online via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition\, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America\, will continue its tour of Indiana at the Upland Historical Society in Upland where it will be on display from Aug. 22-Oct. 4\, 2026. The exhibition gives an in-depth look on America’s democracy and brings discussions about democracy to local communities. Host organizations will present a companion exhibition and series of programs in their communities during the exhibits six-week visit.  \nThe exhibit will tour the seven small towns across Indiana during the Semiquincentennial\, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. SUMMARY:The Fourth of July in Pekin\, IN: Documentary Premiere & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Indiana Humanities\, the Pekin Community Betterment Organization\, and the John Hay Center for a premiere screening of The Fourth of July in Pekin\, IN\, a new short documentary about Pekin’s annual celebration. The documentary\, directed by local filmmaker Erik Thein\, captures the spirit of Pekin’s Fourth of July festivities\, a yearly tradition where generations of Pekin residents have come together to make the celebration the oldest consecutively-celebrated Fourth of July festival in the nation. \nAfter the screening\, there will be a brief Q&A with the filmmakers and with community members who have had a hand in organizing the festival. There will also be opportunities to share your own Fourth of July memories and feedback about the film as the filmmakers work to develop what they’ve captured into a full-length documentary. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, though registration is appreciated.
