SUMMARY:Conversations in Indiana's African American History: "'Slavery Can Have No Existence in the State of Indiana': Black Women\, Slavery\, and Unfreedom in Indiana\, 1787–1830"
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, Freetown Village presents monthly conversations with historians\, researchers\, and educators to discuss topics related to Indiana’s Black heritage. \nMay’s program features Dr. Jazma Sutton\, assistant professor of history at Miami University in Ohio. Sutton will discuss State v. Lasselle\, the 1820 Indiana Supreme Court case in which Polly Strong\, an enslaved woman\, sued for her freedom. Strong ultimately won the case\, with the state supreme court ruling that slavery had no legal standing in Indiana under the 1816 constitution. However\, Sutton will explain how this legal victory did not end Black Hoosiers’ struggles for freedom\, as courts and local authorities continued to permit slavery and unfreedom through legal loopholes and deference to white men’s claims over Black women’s labor. \nThe event\, which includes a question-and-answer session\, will be presented both in person and online via Zoom. Douglas Hurt\, who will discuss the history of agriculture in the 19th-century Midwest. \nHurt is professor emeritus in the department of history at Purdue University\, where he served as department head. He also has held the positions of professor and director of the Graduate Program in Agricultural History and Rural Studies at Iowa State University\, associate director of the State Historical Society of Missouri\, and curator of agriculture at the Ohio Historical Society. DESCRIPTION:The Jeffersonville committee of the American Friends of Lafayette joins with area partners to host a series of programs marking the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Jeffersonville\, Indiana\, as part of his “farewell tour” of America. \nThe programming series culminates with several activities on May 12\, the date that Lafayette visited southern Indiana 200 years ago. Events include: \n\nWelcome Lafayette (10 a.m.\, 1101 E. River Rd.\, Louisville)\nThe public is invited to gather at the Big Four Lawn in Louisville’s Waterfront Park to welcome Lafayette as he arrives accompanied by the Old Guard Army Fife and Drum Corps. Guests may join a parade of flags to escort Lafayette across the Ohio River to Jeffersonville via the Big Four Bridge (a 20-minute walk).\nJeffersonville Celebration (1 p.m.\, 223 Pearl St.\, Jeffersonville)\nLafayette and his entourage are expected to arrive at the Big Four Station Park in Jeffersonville at approximately 1 p.m. The public is invited to join representatives from the Indiana Freemasons\, Daughters of the American Revolution\, and Sons of the American Revolution; local dignitaries; and descendants of Revolutionary War solider Zalmon Burritt in the festivities. Activities will include the dedication of the Unknown Revolutionary War Patriots Memorial\, the planting of two trees in nearby Veterans Memorial Park\, and a reception featuring food\, nonalcoholic drinks\, and toasts to President George Washington and other heroes of the American Revolution.\nPlay and Reception (7 to 9 p.m.\, 200 E. DESCRIPTION:The Quilters Hall of Fame presents an exhibition of quilts by Hubert Ver Mehren\, who this year will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Heritage Honoree in recognition of his significant impact on the quilt world in the 1930s. Ver Mehren’s quilt patterns are considered some of the most complex and dramatic designs of the day. Ver Mehren marketed his patterns anonymously or under pseudonyms and is largely unknown\, so this exhibition will help bring his work to light. The exhibition runs from May 6 to July 26. DESCRIPTION:Author Janis Thornton will talk about tornadoes in Howard County\, Indiana\, and in particular the tornado outbreak on Palm Sunday\, April 11\, 1965\, the deadliest ever to hit the state. During the late afternoon and early evening that balmy day\, ten tornadoes struck the central and northern parts of the state\, killing 137 people. DESCRIPTION:The Martin Luther King Center is partnering with Butler University’s Desmond Tutu Peace Lab to present the Beloved Community Conversations Series. The conversations in the four-part series will focus on the “triple evils” identified by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (poverty\, racism\, and militarism) along with environmental degradation. Each conversation will offer an artistic performance by a poet or spoken-word artist followed by a panel discussion featuring the artist as well as scholars\, community activists\, and individuals with lived experiences pertinent to the theme. Following the panel\, a facilitated community conversation will explore how the topics align with Dr. King’s principles of nonviolence and contribute to building the Beloved Community. \nThe April 10 conversation\, the second in the series\, centers on racism. She lives in Michigan and loves spending time with her family. Kat’s young adult novel\, Junkyard Dogs\, is also set in Indiana and addresses issues of teen poverty and homelessness. It is inspired by her own experiences growing up in poverty and also by South Bend’s 2006 Manhole Murders\, which made national news. Junkyard Dogs is honored on the 2024 Indiana Authors Awards Young Adult Shortlist.

SUMMARY:Black Quilters: Hard Topics\, Soft Blows
DESCRIPTION:Arts hold a vital place of importance in our society. Quilts\, often seen as “women’s work” and “sheer arts and crafts” by some\, actually have a prominent place in telling the struggles and triumphs of many cultures. Moreover\, the African American community has fought to tell its stories and quilts have been used as an important vehicle to tell these stories. From individuals and guilds alike\, the artistry of African American quilters can no longer be denied as frontrunners of the quilting scene. \nTandem Community Birth Center and Postpartum House is in the final stages of its community quilt project. The quilts being made by community members will be hung at Tandem in birthing and postpartum rooms – to serve as a visual reminder of the supportive community welcoming the birth of new families in their community. The talk by Dr. Dickerson on the history and significance of quilts\, particularly rooted in the African American tradition\, offers a unique opportunity to deepen understanding of cultural heritage\, social connections\, and the power of symbols. Among the truest believers in the principles of the American Revolution\, Lafayette left a life of wealth and prestige in France to repeatedly risk his life and fortune to promote liberty and equality in the Americas and Europe. His work would not have been possible without the political savvy\, financial management\, and dauntless courage of Madame Lafayette\, the general’s wife Adrienne. \nIn her talk\, Dray will explore the legacy of the Marquis de Lafayette and the remarkable women in his life\, drawing on her latest novel\, The Women of Chateau Lafayette\, to delve into the Marquis and Madame Lafayette’s role in the American Revolution\, the French Revolution\, and beyond.
