SUMMARY:House of 1\,000 Spirits
DESCRIPTION:Many years ago\, celebrated author of his time Meredith Nicholson paced the rooms at 1500 N. Delaware St.\, where Indiana Humanities is located today. \nSome say his spirit still walks the halls\, turning off lights and knocking the books of his old competitors off the bookshelves of our Novel Conversations library. \nDo you believe in ghosts? Regardless of your answer\, you’re invited to a ghostly good time at Indiana Humanities on Tuesday\, Oct. 28. As part of the festivities\, Dr. Tamara Hunt\, a history professor at the University of Southern Indiana\, will share a short presentation about ghosts that are said to haunt the Hoosier State. \nThis opportunity includes light refreshments and an intimate house tour with our very own George Hanlin — resident expert of both the Nicholson House and the Nicholson family.

SUMMARY:Jeff Darren Muse at Bloomington Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Bloomington Book Festival is an annual celebration in Bloomington\, Indiana\, designed to promote literacy and connect readers with authors through a variety of events\, panels\, and community gatherings. Founded to support reading and foster Bloomington’s literary community\, the festival features local and national authors\, publishers\, and booksellers\, with proceeds helping to establish the Monroe County Literacy Foundation. Jeff Darren Muse will represent a non fiction author for the festival. \nAbout Jeff Darren Muse:  \nBorn and raised in Indiana\, Muse graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1987 and DePauw University in 1991. With master’s degrees in science and creative writing\, he has been employed by numerous agencies\, public universities\, and nonprofit organizations\, from McLeod Plantation Historic Site and Zion National Park\, to The Evergreen State College and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse\, to Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and North Cascades Institute. Be it north\, south\, east\, or west\, he embodies the Crossroads of America.  \nAs a writer\, Muse is inspired by Brian Doyle’s dictum: “The essay is a jackdaw\, a magpie\, a raven. It picks up everything and uses it.” Exploring nature\, culture\, family life\, and his own highs and lows\, Muse’s essays have appeared in Ascent\, The Common\, High Country News\, and River Teeth\, among others. His book\, Dear Park Ranger\, interrogates his lifelong restlessness—that of a fatherless\, childless Hoosier who wouldn’t and couldn’t stay put. In 2024\, Nautilus Book Awards honored his memoir-in-essays with a silver medal\, and Foreword Reviews deemed it a finalist for a 2023 INDIES Book of the Year Award.  \nWith his wife\, “Ranger Paula\,” Muse has returned home to central Indiana where he now battles cancer—his own. In the summer of 2023\, as they both rangered in New Mexico\, he experienced a cluster of confusing symptoms. An MRI revealed a brain tumor. Healthcare laid out a map. “Don’t fret\,” he says. “I’m still here! Still hiking!” Along with writing about this new wilderness\, Muse continues to connect people to places and people to each other—all ages\, all walks of life.

The workshop’s subject matter aligns with Indiana’s academic standards and is especially ideal for teachers who cover Indiana history in their classrooms. In addition to exploring creative and exciting ways to teach this material\, teachers will learn about new developments in their field\, obtain curricular materials for the classroom\, and network with other educators. Participants will leave the workshop with ideas for cross-disciplinary projects and lesson plans incorporating the workshop topics into the state curriculum. \nTo register\, click on the RSVP link above. \nFor more information\, email hsi@usi.edu. \nThis program received support from an Indiana Humanities Action Grant.
