Massey founded the literary arts organization\, UnLearn Arts\, radically dedicated to amplifying and cultivating the craft and wellness of BIPOC writers in the Midwest and elsewhere. \nMitchell L. H. Douglas is the author of four poetry collections: Universal Corner\, dying in the scarecrow’s arms\, \blak\ \al-fə bet\\, winner of the Persea Books Lexi Rudnitsky/Editor’s Choice Award\, and Cooling Board: A Long-Playing Poem\, an NAACP Image Award and Hurston/Wright Legacy Award nominee. His “Poem that Begins w/a Tweet About Gwendolyn Brooks” was featured in This is the Honey: An Anthology of Contemporary Black Poets edited by New York Times best-selling author Kwame Alexander. Participants will follow a route connecting public sculptures throughout the community\, with opportunities to take selfies\, engage with public art installations\, and access audio storytelling through QR-enabled sites. \nIn addition to the 5K\, attendees will be introduced to the Landmark + Art Guide (LAG)\, a growing initiative highlighting additional landmarks\, historic sites\, and cultural destinations throughout Michigan City and northwest Indiana. DESCRIPTION:The past is yours to savor at the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon. At this historic reenactment you can recapture 18th-century life at Fort Ouiatenon—the first fortified European outpost in what is now Indiana. \nThe Feast of the Hunters’ Moon is a re-creation of the annual fall gathering of the French and Native Americans that took place Fort Ouiatenon\, a fur-trading outpost in the mid-1700s. It is held annually in early autumn on the banks of the Wabash River\, four miles southwest of West Lafayette\, Indiana. \nThousands of participants reenact this event and create a feast for the senses\, including smells of smoke\, sounds of rifles\, tastes of authentic period food\, and more. \nContinuous free programming is held on five stages. French and Native American music and dance\, fife and drum corps performances\, military drills and demonstrations\, fashion shows\, and games and contests can be enjoyed at the 59th celebration of this event. Special hands-on activities include the children’s trade blanket\, costume try-on\, candle-dipping\, storytelling\, bead bracelet making\, cross-cut sawing\, and axe throwing. \nHours are Saturday\, October 24\, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT\, and Sunday\, October 25\, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT. SUMMARY:The Lost Photographs of Osbert Sumner
DESCRIPTION:In 1898\, Osbert Sumner (1873–1932) was given a camera by his coworkers after leaving his position at a downtown wholesale grocery. With it\, he captured a unique perspective of Indianapolis at the turn of the twentieth century. His glass negatives were left under the basement stairs of his home in Irvington\, where they remained hidden for decades\, only to be discovered by future owners who donated them to the Irvington Historical Society. There were no names\, no dates\, just a cache of incredible images waiting to be identified\, more than 300 of them. For more than seven years\, researchers at the Irvington Historical Society have worked to identify the people\, places\, and stories depicted in the images. \nDeedee Davis\, Irvington Historical Society board member and reference archivist for the Indianapolis City-County Archives\, will discuss the collaborative research process and the discoveries that offer a largely unseen perspective of early Indianapolis.
