DESCRIPTION:Selected scenes from PBS’s THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION will explore the sacrifice\, endurance\, and spirit of service that shaped a new nation. \nThe evening will also honor Revolutionary War Patriots and pioneer families who later settled in Delaware County\, Indiana\, and introduce genealogy tools for discovering your own Patriot connection. \nFeaturing:\nTheresa Green\, Indiana State DAR Registrar\nKathryn Kesterson\, Regent\, Paul Revere Chapter\nNational Archives Resources & DAR Genealogical Research System \nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY  \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. It declared American independence with promises that we continue to strive for. DESCRIPTION:History meets hip hop under the stars. \nJoin La Porte County Parks and Recreation for a special Hamilton Trivia Night and Movies in the Park event. This free public program celebrates America’s 250th anniversary with a fresh\, modern take on the nation’s founding story. \nTrivia begins at 7:30 p.m.\, followed by a screening of Hamilton at dusk. \nBefore the film\, attendees can take part in a live Hamilton-themed trivia experience led by Purdue University Northwest professors Dr. Joseph Cochran and Dr. Yu (Yo) Ouyang. Participants will play in teams as they explore the real people\, events\, and ideas behind the musical through an engaging and interactive format designed for a broad public audience. No prior knowledge of history is required. \nTeams are encouraged to pre-register for a chance to participate in the trivia experience and to be entered into a door prize drawing. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis program has been made possible by Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations\, WNIN\, and Indiana Humanities\, with special thanks to the Evansville Wartime Museum. \nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. DESCRIPTION:The Studebaker National Museum welcomes author and historian Ryan L. Cole for an engaging evening celebrating his new book\, The Last Adieu: Lafayette’s Triumphant Return\, the Echoes of Revolution\, and the Gratitude of the Republic. Cole will bring to life the remarkable 1824–1825 grand tour in which the Marquis de Lafayette—the last living major general of the Continental Army—journeyed through all twenty-four states of the young republic\, inspiring hundreds of celebrations\, parades\, and events in his honor. Arriving on American shores\, Lafayette himself wrote that “memories of the Revolution have come back to life”—a sentiment that feels just as resonant today as America prepares to mark its 250th anniversary. Lafayette’s tour\, and the outpouring of gratitude it inspired\, offers a powerful lens through which we can shape our own celebration of America 250. \nThe evening then moves to one of the Studebaker National Museum’s most extraordinary artifacts\, as Curator Kyle Sater shares the fascinating story behind one of the carriages Lafayette used during his celebrated tour of the United States\, a permanent part of the museum’s collection. SUMMARY:Conversations in Indiana's African American History: "We All Just Did Life Together": The Forgotten Story of the Black Southside of Indianapolis
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2026\, Freetown Village presents monthly conversations with historians\, researchers\, and educators to discuss topics related to Indiana’s Black heritage. \nJune’s program features Dr. Susan B. Hyatt\, professor emerita of anthropology at Indiana University Indianapolis\, and Beverle Miller Kane\, longtime resident of Indianapolis’s south side and a Babe Denny “navigator” with the Southside US Colored Troop Coalition. Hyatt and Kane will share a forgotten history of the near-south side neighborhood. \nBetween the early 1900s and the 1960s\, the near-south side was home to a rich mix of communities\, including African Americans and Jewish immigrants. During a period in the city’s history more often defined by Jim Crow segregation than by integration\, neighborhood residents—Black and white—“all just did life together\,” as Kane recalls. \nThe neighborhood was dramatically reshaped in the 1970s by the construction of I‑70 and again in the early 2000s with the building of Lucas Oil Stadium. Hyatt and Kane will explore the stories of these residents\, their once‑vibrant neighborhood\, and the project that reunited them after 50 years to share their memories. \nThe event\, which includes a question-and-answer session\, will be presented both in person and online via Zoom. The screenings will begin at 10 AM in Meeting Rooms ABC and you will have the opportunity to connect with local organizations\, museums\, and others to see how local history fits into America’s story. \n\nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY  \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. It declared American independence with promises that we continue to strive for. SUMMARY:Picturing Pierceton: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Through rare historical photographs paired with recent views\, historian and Pierceton native Joan Hostetler will bring Pierceton’s downtown to life. \nTopics include the oldest surviving Italianate-style structures dating to 1882\, the great fire of 1895 that destroyed the west side of First Street\, the work of hometown architect Frank Logan and how the antiques trade put Pierceton on the map. The downtown commercial district is remarkably intact and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nAttendees are also welcome to bring their own Pierceton-area photographs to the presentation. A scanner will be on hand to copy them into the Library’s digital archive during the program. \n  \nFunding for this Historic Preservation Month program is provided by a Historic Preservation Education Grant from Indiana Humanities and Indiana Landmarks.
