SUMMARY:History on the Block featuring a special screening of PBS's THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
DESCRIPTION:Join the Monroe County History Center for a celebration of 250 years of American history\, with a local Monroe County twist. The celebration will be on the front lawn of the MCHC on Saturday\, July 11th from 12-3pm. Enjoy hands on activities\, live music\, educational demos\, guided tours\, and more! \nAt 2 pm\, Indiana Humanities\, Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations and WTIU/WFIU will host a special screening of clips from the new PBS docuseries THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. After the screening\, attendees are encouraged to visit the History Center’s exhibition of Monroe County Revolutionary War veterans. \nThis screening\, and all the block party activities are free and open to the public. \nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY  \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. It declared American independence with promises that we continue to strive for. The American Revolution opened the door to advance civil liberties and human rights\, and it asked questions that we are still trying to answer today. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM \nCorporate funding for The American Revolution was provided by Bank of America. We jury the Firefly Early Literacy Book Award\, we have interactive displays and kiosks to teach about the Library of Congress and literacy\, we host the Indiana Statehood Day writing contest and the Letters About Literature writing contest\, we manage a program to offer storytime\, STEAM\, book\, Lego\, and escape experience kits for teachers and librarians across the state\, we host events and author visits\, we created the Indiana Literary Places Map\, and we support a collect of materials for young people written and illustrated by Indiana Authors and Illustrators. \nAbout Great Reads from Great Places \nEach year the Affiliated Centers for the Book participate in the National Book Festival in Washington DC. Each Center for the Book Affiliate will staff a booth in the Festival’s Roadmap to Reading area to promote reading\, libraries and literacy in their state. Annually\, these Affiliated Centers for the Book select “Great Reads from Great Places.” Each affiliate chooses two titles. In most cases\, these books—one for youth and one for adults—are written by authors from their state or territory\, take place in their state or territory and/or celebrate local culture and heritage. In addition\, this year\, in honor of America’s 250th Semiquincentennial\, affiliate centers were encouraged to choose a title that connects to that theme in some way. The Indiana Affiliate Center for the Book works with Indiana Humanities to select titles. \n

DESCRIPTION:What is GIS (Graphic Information Systems)? The Indianapolis Public Library will offer a session explaining the basics of GIS and how your daily life is impacted by geography. Are you curious about how your Google Maps app works? Do you want to know more about how modern maps are made online?
