DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition\, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America\, will continue its tour of Indiana at the Love Community Center in Rushville where it will be on display from July 5-Aug. 16\, 2026. The exhibition gives an in-depth look on America’s democracy and brings discussions about democracy to local communities. Host organizations will present a companion exhibition and series of programs in their communities during the exhibit’s six-week visit. \nThe exhibition will be open during Love Community Center normal operating hours: \nMonday-Friday: 5 am-9 pm\nSaturday: 7 am-5 pm\nSunday: 12 pm-5 pm \nThe exhibit will tour the seven small towns across Indiana during the Semiquincentennial\, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It highlights how young people\, like Imogene\, can make a difference in their communities as we read about Imogene fighting to preserve history and save the local Historical Society from demolition. There is an Affiliate Center for the Book in each of the 50 states\, the District of Columbia\, Puerto Rico\, the U.S. Virgin Islands\, Guam\, American Samoa and Northern Marianas. These Centers also elevate and advocate for each state’s unique literary heritage – developed by writers whose works reflect distinctively American places. Their stories\, novels\, essays\, poems and other written works\, rooted in the nation’s extraordinary diversity of people and geography\, are often featured in the programs supported by the Affiliated Centers for the Book. These Centers engage\, inspire\, and inform diverse audiences through author talks\, web-based programs\, podcasts\, videos\, writing challenges for young people\, book festivals and other events designed to advance appreciation of the written word. \nThe Indiana Affiliate Center for the Book is housed at the Indiana Young Readers Center at the Indiana State Library. The Indiana Affiliate Center for the Book (ICB) has several exciting programs that Hoosiers can get involved with to promote literacy. We jury the Firefly Early Literacy Book Award\, we have interactive displays and kiosks to teach about the Library of Congress and literacy\, we host the Indiana Statehood Day writing contest and the Letters About Literature writing contest\, we manage a program to offer storytime\, STEAM\, book\, Lego\, and escape experience kits for teachers and librarians across the state\, we host events and author visits\, we created the Indiana Literary Places Map\, and we support a collect of materials for young people written and illustrated by Indiana Authors and Illustrators. \nAbout Great Reads from Great Places \nEach year the Affiliated Centers for the Book participate in the National Book Festival in Washington DC. Each Center for the Book Affiliate will staff a booth in the Festival’s Roadmap to Reading area to promote reading\, libraries and literacy in their state. Annually\, these Affiliated Centers for the Book select “Great Reads from Great Places.” Each affiliate chooses two titles. In most cases\, these books—one for youth and one for adults—are written by authors from their state or territory\, take place in their state or territory and/or celebrate local culture and heritage. In addition\, this year\, in honor of America’s 250th Semiquincentennial\, affiliate centers were encouraged to choose a title that connects to that theme in some way. DESCRIPTION:The Myaamia Heritage Foundation hosts the inaugural Myaamia Cultural Fest to celebrate the heritage and culture of Fort Wayne’s Indigenous people\, the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. \nActivities will include traditional Myaamia (Miami) games\, talks about the Tribe’s history\, and vendors selling handmade Myaamia artwork. Myaamia artists will offer live demonstrations and lead hands-on activities where visitors can explore art forms such as beadwork\, basketry\, and finger weaving. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Line Break Writers Series\, supported by Indiana Humanities\, is a three-day writing retreat open to local writers. The series will take place Friday\, Sept. 18 – Sunday\, Sept. 20 at Indiana Humanities. \n\nThis year’s theme is The Power of Practicing Craft with a focus on community and creating a routine together. Writers who attend will grow together as artists\, learning more about the creative and practical process of creating meaningful poems\, sustaining oneself as a professional writer\, and preparing for their work to be published in our online anthology\, Iambic Pen. Massey has received support from Brooklyn Poets\, Hurston/Wright Foundation\, and Tin House. She’s a Randolph College MFA graduate and 2023 Best of Net Award winner and 2020 Indiana Eugene and Marilyn Glick Author Awards Emerging Author finalist for her first collection of poetry\, Bursting At The Seams (VK Press\, 2018)\, a Midwest Black girl coming of age story. Massey founded the literary arts organization\, UnLearn Arts\, radically dedicated to amplifying and cultivating the craft and wellness of BIPOC writers in the Midwest and elsewhere. \nMitchell L. H. Douglas is the author of four poetry collections: Universal Corner\, dying in the scarecrow’s arms\, \blak\ \al-fə bet\\, winner of the Persea Books Lexi Rudnitsky/Editor’s Choice Award\, and Cooling Board: A Long-Playing Poem\, an NAACP Image Award and Hurston/Wright Legacy Award nominee. His “Poem that Begins w/a Tweet About Gwendolyn Brooks” was featured in This is the Honey: An Anthology of Contemporary Black Poets edited by New York Times best-selling author Kwame Alexander. DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition\, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America\, will continue its tour of Indiana at the The Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University and the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in Greencastle where it will be on display from Oct. 10-Nov. 20\, 2026. The exhibition gives an in-depth look on America’s democracy and brings discussions about democracy to local communities. Host organizations will present a companion exhibition and series of programs in their communities during the exhibits six-week visit.  \nThe exhibit will tour the seven small towns across Indiana during the Semiquincentennial\, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. DESCRIPTION:The Michigan City Public Art 5K and Landmark Discovery Experience is a community event that combines wellness\, public art\, local history\, and interactive storytelling. Hosted in partnership with local organizations\, the event aligns with the Michigan City Public Art Commission’s 5K Run/Walk. Participants will follow a route connecting public sculptures throughout the community\, with opportunities to take selfies\, engage with public art installations\, and access audio storytelling through QR-enabled sites. \nIn addition to the 5K\, attendees will be introduced to the Landmark + Art Guide (LAG)\, a growing initiative highlighting additional landmarks\, historic sites\, and cultural destinations throughout Michigan City and northwest Indiana.
