At this historic reenactment you can recapture 18th-century life at Fort Ouiatenon—the first fortified European outpost in what is now Indiana. \nThe Feast of the Hunters’ Moon is a re-creation of the annual fall gathering of the French and Native Americans that took place Fort Ouiatenon\, a fur-trading outpost in the mid-1700s. SUMMARY:An Evening with Wright Thompson and Michael Koryta
DESCRIPTION:Join the Bloomington Book Festival for the third-annual presentation of the Bob Hammel Writing Award. \nThe 2026 winner and keynote speaker is Wright Thompson\, a New York Times bestselling author and revered journalist. A native of Clarksdale\, in the Mississippi Delta\, Thompson has spent two decades proving that the best stories are often about ambition\, loss\, family\, and the price of greatness. \nHis latest book\, The Barn: The Secret History of a Murder in Mississippi\, is a haunting account of the brutal 1955 murder of Emmett Till\, named a Best Book of the Year by the Washington Post\, TIME\, and Vanity Fair and nominated for a PEN America Literary Award. \nIn his journalism for ESPN and the Atlantic\, Thompson has written the definitive profiles of legends ranging from Ted Williams to Michael Jordan\, revealed the secret history of Tiger Woods’ Navy SEAL fascination\, and penned many of the most-read articles in ESPN’s history. Some of those pieces were collected in his New York Times bestseller\, The Cost of These Dreams: Sports Stories and Other Serious Business. \nAnother bestseller was Pappyland: A Story of Family\, Fine Bourbon\, and the Things That Last\, which is both a chronicle of the remarkable history of world-famous Pappy Van Winkle whiskey and a meditation on the traditions worth preserving. (We’re hoping Wright will offer an opinion on Indiana’s finest bourbon by the end of the night.) \nPresenting the Hammel Award and joining Wright in conversation is Bloomington native Michael Koryta\, a New York Times bestselling author whose new novel\, Die Famous\, releases September 22. Set in Indiana in 1937\, the novel follows Savannah Cody and her son Alford as they pursue the man she once loved and the nation now fears—the outlaw Nickel Terhune—from the Midwest to Maine. Stephen King called Die Famous “the best gangster novel I’ve ever read.” The evening with Wright Thompson will be Koryta’s only appearance in Bloomington this fall. Both writers will sign books following the event. \nDon’t miss the chance to hear these authors talk about their craft\, influences\, and bourbon preferences! \nTickets are required and may be purchased by clicking on the RSVP link above. For more information\, email bloomingtonbookfest@gmail.com. \nThis program received support from an Indiana Humanities Mini-Grant.

SUMMARY:Story Hour: Hansel and Gretel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a spooky Story Hour on Monday\, October 27\, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.\, featuring Stephen King and Maurice Sendak’s haunting retelling of Hansel and Gretel. This is a story about fear and courage\, about who to trust and who to doubt\, and about the choices we make when things get desperate. We’ll read together\, then open it up for discussion\, asking what it really means to be brave and how far is too far to go to survive. This version leans into the dark and suspenseful side of the tale\, so it’s best suited for grade-school readers and up. This event is free and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Common Read Conversation: Daniel Kraus and Dr. Abby Fraeman
DESCRIPTION:What can a 75-year-old science fiction classic teach us about the future? \n\nTechnology promises to connect us\, but can it also drive us further apart? Seventy-five years after its publication\, Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man continues to spark conversations about some of the most important questions facing society today: How is technology changing our lives and relationships? What do we fear\, and what do we hope for\, as we look toward the future? How do imagination\, family\, and community shape the world we create together? \nJoin Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Kraus\, NASA planetary scientist Dr. Abby Fraeman\, deputy project scientist for the Curiosity rover mission\, and award-winning Indianapolis author and Afrofuturist Maurice Broaddus for an engaging conversation that explores the enduring relevance of Bradbury’s work and the intersections of science\, storytelling\, technology\, and humanity. \nThis free public event is the culminating experience of the 2026 Indianapolis Common Read\, a city-wide initiative that has brought together readers\, students\, educators\, libraries\, book clubs\, workplaces\, and community organizations through a shared reading experience. Throughout the fall\, participants have explored The Illustrated Man and its themes through reading groups\, community discussions\, educational programming\, and cultural events designed to foster dialogue and connection across Central Indiana. \nPresented by IU Indianapolis in partnership with the Ray Bradbury Center\, Indiana Humanities\, Indiana Life Sciences Association\, the Indianapolis Public Library System\, schools\, cultural organizations\, and community partners\, the Common Read demonstrates the power of stories to bring people together around big ideas and shared questions about our future. \nWhether you’ve read the book cover-to-cover\, participated in a discussion group\, or are simply curious about the ideas it inspires\, you are invited to join fellow community members for an evening of conversation\, reflection\, and discovery. \nOne city. One book. Many perspectives. Join the conversation. \nThousands of copies of The Illustrated Man have been made available through libraries across Indianapolis and surrounding counties. \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival (Nov. 5–15). SUMMARY:The Lost Photographs of Osbert Sumner
DESCRIPTION:In 1898\, Osbert Sumner (1873–1932) was given a camera by his coworkers after leaving his position at a downtown wholesale grocery. With it\, he captured a unique perspective of Indianapolis at the turn of the twentieth century. His glass negatives were left under the basement stairs of his home in Irvington\, where they remained hidden for decades\, only to be discovered by future owners who donated them to the Irvington Historical Society. There were no names\, no dates\, just a cache of incredible images waiting to be identified\, more than 300 of them. For more than seven years\, researchers at the Irvington Historical Society have worked to identify the people\, places\, and stories depicted in the images. \nDeedee Davis\, Irvington Historical Society board member and reference archivist for the Indianapolis City-County Archives\, will discuss the collaborative research process and the discoveries that offer a largely unseen perspective of early Indianapolis. Davis’s talk is presented as part the Indianapolis Public Library’s Culture\, History\, and Society series. \nNote that the program takes place in the Indianapolis Special Collections Room (ISCR) on the 6th floor within Central Library. \nFor more information\, contact Montoya Barker at mbarker@indypl.org or call the library at 317.275.4100. \nThis program received support from an Indiana Humanities Mini-Grant.
