SUMMARY:Isaac Fitzgerald Author Event
DESCRIPTION:Join Loudmouth Books for a conversation with New York Times-bestselling author for his new book\, AMERICAN RAMBLER: Walking the Trail of Johnny Appleseed! \nABOUT THE BOOK: In AMERICAN RAMBLER\, Isaac sets off to the heart of America\, on a one year long adventure\, following the path of the legendary Johnny Appleseed on an epic journey that both takes him far from home and brings him closer to it. \nThis is a book for those seeking the literary inheritance of Jack Kerouac; walking stories humorous and deep-cutting alike (A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson and Wild by Cheryl Strayed); deeply-researched\, historically informed memoirs like The Oregon Trail by Rinker Buck; memoirs of nature as balm for substance abuse\, such as The Outrun; and movies about finding yourself as you walk\, such as The Way with Martin Sheen. \nAs a child\, Isaac Fitzgerald was always captivated by Johnny Appleseed\, drawn by family ties to the legend\, his father’s larger-than-life stories\, and a shared restlessness to leave home and discover what lies beyond. In AMERICAN RAMBLER\, he sets out\, walking from Massachusetts to Indiana on a year-long journey to follow Appleseed’s path\, turning a childhood fascination into a profound reckoning of loss and grief\, ritual and faith\, grimy gas-station bathrooms and scenic apple picking. A moving blend of memoir\, history\, and travelogue\, AMERICAN RAMBLER is at once an ode to the American heartland and an antidote to the breakneck pace of modern life. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: Isaac Fitzgerald is the New York Times bestselling author of Dirtbag\, Massachusetts. He is also the author of the bestselling children’s book How to Be a Pirate as well as the co-author of Pen & Ink: Tattoos and the Stories Behind Them and Knives & Ink: Chefs and the Stories Behind Their Tattoos (winner of an IACP Award). He appears frequently on The Today Show\, and his writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Esquire\, GQ\, The Guardian\, The Best American Nonrequired Reading\, and numerous other publications. He lives with his wife on the North Fork of Long Island. \nABOUT THE MODERATOR: Nathan Shuherk is a nonfiction book reviewer on social media under the username @schizophrenicreads. He’s an MFA student at Butler University and working on his first book\, a memoir about mental health and the politics of being disabled in America. He lives in Broad Ripple with his partner and three cats.

SUMMARY:Screening of THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION at Allen County America250 (Fort Wayne)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE\, all day screening of “The American Revolution” to celebrate America250! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPBS Fort Wayne and the Allen County America250 Committee present “The American Revolution” by Ken Burns. The screenings will begin at 10 AM in Meeting Rooms ABC and you will have the opportunity to connect with local organizations\, museums\, and others to see how local history fits into America’s story. \n\nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. It declared American independence with promises that we continue to strive for. The American Revolution opened the door to advance civil liberties and human rights\, and it asked questions that we are still trying to answer today. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM \nCorporate funding for The American Revolution was provided by Bank of America. Major funding was provided by The Better Angels Society and its members Jeannie and Jonathan Lavine with the Crimson Lion Foundation; and the Blavatnik Family Foundation. SUMMARY:THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Screening and Discussion (Valparaiso)
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, clips from the new PBS documentary “The American Revolution” will be shown in the Harre Union ballrooms on April 22\, 2026 from 3-5pm Central. The program will feature clips from the longer 12-part series\, followed by facilitated table conversations. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis program has been made possible by Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations\, Lakeshore Public Media\, and Indiana Humanities\, with special thanks to Valparaiso University. \n  \nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down.
