DESCRIPTION:This introductory workshop provides hands-on experience researching local history. Participants will research primary sources\, including Sanborn maps\, old newspapers\, town directories\, and genealogy records. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own laptops to conduct guided online research during the session. This workshop is part of a larger project that will culminate in the creation of educational signs for Pierceton’s historic downtown buildings. The celebration will be on the front lawn of the MCHC on Saturday\, July 11th from 12-3pm. Enjoy hands on activities\, live music\, educational demos\, guided tours\, and more! \nAt 2 pm\, Indiana Humanities\, Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations and WTIU/WFIU will host a special screening of clips from the new PBS docuseries THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. After the screening\, attendees are encouraged to visit the History Center’s exhibition of Monroe County Revolutionary War veterans. \nThis screening\, and all the block party activities are free and open to the public. \nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY  \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. It declared American independence with promises that we continue to strive for. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. DESCRIPTION:The Colonial Fair is an award-winning two-day living-history event that offers guests the opportunity to step back in time to 1776 in celebration of America’s 250th birthday. Visitors to the fair will be immersed into the life of a village during the time of the American Revolution. They’ll meet unknown people from all walks of life and hear their stories. SUMMARY:The Last Adieu: Lafayette’s Farewell Tour and the Carriage That Carried a Nation’s Memory
DESCRIPTION:The Studebaker National Museum welcomes author and historian Ryan L. Cole for an engaging evening celebrating his new book\, The Last Adieu: Lafayette’s Triumphant Return\, the Echoes of Revolution\, and the Gratitude of the Republic. Cole will bring to life the remarkable 1824–1825 grand tour in which the Marquis de Lafayette—the last living major general of the Continental Army—journeyed through all twenty-four states of the young republic\, inspiring hundreds of celebrations\, parades\, and events in his honor. Arriving on American shores\, Lafayette himself wrote that “memories of the Revolution have come back to life”—a sentiment that feels just as resonant today as America prepares to mark its 250th anniversary. Lafayette’s tour\, and the outpouring of gratitude it inspired\, offers a powerful lens through which we can shape our own celebration of America 250. \nThe evening then moves to one of the Studebaker National Museum’s most extraordinary artifacts\, as Curator Kyle Sater shares the fascinating story behind one of the carriages Lafayette used during his celebrated tour of the United States\, a permanent part of the museum’s collection. Following both talks\, guests are invited to enjoy a Q&A session\, light refreshments\, and the chance to explore the rest of the museum at their leisure. \nDoors open at 5:30 p.m.\, and the program runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tickets are free\, but reservations are highly encouraged. SUMMARY:Conversations in Indiana's African American History: "We All Just Did Life Together": The Forgotten Story of the Black Southside of Indianapolis
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2026\, Freetown Village presents monthly conversations with historians\, researchers\, and educators to discuss topics related to Indiana’s Black heritage. \nJune’s program features Dr. Susan B. Hyatt\, professor emerita of anthropology at Indiana University Indianapolis\, and Beverle Miller Kane\, longtime resident of Indianapolis’s south side and a Babe Denny “navigator” with the Southside US Colored Troop Coalition. Hyatt and Kane will share a forgotten history of the near-south side neighborhood. \nBetween the early 1900s and the 1960s\, the near-south side was home to a rich mix of communities\, including African Americans and Jewish immigrants. During a period in the city’s history more often defined by Jim Crow segregation than by integration\, neighborhood residents—Black and white—“all just did life together\,” as Kane recalls. \nThe neighborhood was dramatically reshaped in the 1970s by the construction of I‑70 and again in the early 2000s with the building of Lucas Oil Stadium. Hyatt and Kane will explore the stories of these residents\, their once‑vibrant neighborhood\, and the project that reunited them after 50 years to share their memories. \nThe event\, which includes a question-and-answer session\, will be presented both in person and online via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Discover The American Revolution\, a landmark series from Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt. This presentation offers selected excerpts from the series\, highlighting military history and strategy during the American Revolution.
