SUMMARY:THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Screening and Discussion (Valparaiso)
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, clips from the new PBS documentary “The American Revolution” will be shown in the Harre Union ballrooms on April 22\, 2026 from 3-5pm Central. The program will feature clips from the longer 12-part series\, followed by facilitated table conversations. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis program has been made possible by Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations\, Lakeshore Public Media\, and Indiana Humanities\, with special thanks to Valparaiso University.  \n  \nABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY  \nTHE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, directed by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. \nAn expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America\, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through their individual stories\, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers)\, Patriot political and military leaders\, British Army officers\, American Loyalists\, Native soldiers and civilians\, enslaved and free African Americans\, German soldiers in the British service\, French and Spanish allies\, and various civilians living in North America\, Loyalist as well as Patriot\, including many made refugees by the war. \nThe Revolution began a movement for people around the world to imagine new and better futures for themselves\, their nations\, and for humanity. It declared American independence with promises that we continue to strive for. DESCRIPTION:A Free Public Event Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary \nThe Studebaker National Museum and The History Museum are proud to join WNIT in presenting a special afternoon program exploring the enduring legacy of the American Revolution. : The History Museum’s Archivist\, Travis Childs\, will offer a talk on local Revolutionary War veterans\, and Studebaker National Museum Curator\, Kyle Sater\, will explore the Museum’s surprising connection to Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette. Guests will also have the opportunity to view Lafayette’s Barouche — the oldest vehicle in the Studebaker Collection. DESCRIPTION:Conner Prairie invites you to tune in as it hosts Curious Conversations\, a series of talks by experts on Indiana history\, covering topics in the areas of natural science\, history\, folklore\, and civics. \nNovember’s program features Michael J. Brown\, executive director of the Indiana Jewish Historical Society\, who’ll discuss the history of Jewish communities in Indiana. \nAn Indiana native\, Brown served as a medic in the U.S. Army National Guard and Reserve\, where he received an honorable discharge. He studied Jewish history at the Borns Jewish Studies Program at Indiana University in Bloomington\, where he graduated. He then became the executive director of Hillel at Southern Illinois University. Later\, he worked in several Israeli tech startups in business development and marketing. He’s currently the executive director of the Indiana Jewish Historical Society and hosts a podcast called IN Jewish History. He researches midwestern Jewish migration patterns and has studied the history of antisemitism in Indiana. \nTo register for the talk\, click on the RSVP link above. SUMMARY:Jeff Darren Muse at Bloomington Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Bloomington Book Festival is an annual celebration in Bloomington\, Indiana\, designed to promote literacy and connect readers with authors through a variety of events\, panels\, and community gatherings. Founded to support reading and foster Bloomington’s literary community\, the festival features local and national authors\, publishers\, and booksellers\, with proceeds helping to establish the Monroe County Literacy Foundation. Jeff Darren Muse will represent a non fiction author for the festival. \nAbout Jeff Darren Muse:  \nBorn and raised in Indiana\, Muse graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1987 and DePauw University in 1991. With master’s degrees in science and creative writing\, he has been employed by numerous agencies\, public universities\, and nonprofit organizations\, from McLeod Plantation Historic Site and Zion National Park\, to The Evergreen State College and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse\, to Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and North Cascades Institute. Be it north\, south\, east\, or west\, he embodies the Crossroads of America.  \nAs a writer\, Muse is inspired by Brian Doyle’s dictum: “The essay is a jackdaw\, a magpie\, a raven. It picks up everything and uses it.” Exploring nature\, culture\, family life\, and his own highs and lows\, Muse’s essays have appeared in Ascent\, The Common\, High Country News\, and River Teeth\, among others. His book\, Dear Park Ranger\, interrogates his lifelong restlessness—that of a fatherless\, childless Hoosier who wouldn’t and couldn’t stay put. In 2024\, Nautilus Book Awards honored his memoir-in-essays with a silver medal\, and Foreword Reviews deemed it a finalist for a 2023 INDIES Book of the Year Award.  \nWith his wife\, “Ranger Paula\,” Muse has returned home to central Indiana where he now battles cancer—his own. In the summer of 2023\, as they both rangered in New Mexico\, he experienced a cluster of confusing symptoms. An MRI revealed a brain tumor. Healthcare laid out a map. “Don’t fret\,” he says. “I’m still here! Still hiking!” Along with writing about this new wilderness\, Muse continues to connect people to places and people to each other—all ages\, all walks of life.
