Marabai’s memoir Holding Hope: One Family’s Odyssey Through Lyme Disease and Psychosis was published in October of 2022.

Please contact the Ferdinand Library at 812-367-1671 with any questions. \nKatherine Higgs-Coulthard graduated from the University of Nebraska\, Omaha with a bachelor’s in education and earned a master’s from Indiana University\, South Bend\, before completing her doctorate in education through Northeastern University. She has taught kindergarten\, third\, and fifth grades. Now she trains teachers at Saint Mary’s College and offers writing camps and classes for children and teens through Michiana Writers’ Center. She lives in Michigan and loves spending time with her family. Kat’s young adult novel\, Junkyard Dogs\, is also set in Indiana and addresses issues of teen poverty and homelessness. It is inspired by her own experiences growing up in poverty and also by South Bend’s 2006 Manhole Murders\, which made national news. Junkyard Dogs is honored on the 2024 Indiana Authors Awards Young Adult Shortlist.

DESCRIPTION:Here’s the big secret about writing novels: the hardest part of writing a novel is finishing it. The day-by-day grind it takes to write a novel can be overwhelming. Great ideas tire out. Real life gets in the way. Doubt overtakes the dream. In this interactive workshop\, Larry D. Sweazy will share proven tips and help beginning and seasoned writers alike\, to build the skills that they need to finish that special novel. Topics discussed will be time management\, building a toolbox\, finding support\, writing tips\, and most importantly living life as a writer\, even if they’re not published. Students should come prepared to write in class. Exercises include determining how many words can be written in a sitting\, character creation\, designing titles\, writing query letters\, and submission techniques. This workshop is designed to jumpstart a writer’s dream and turn it into a happy reality. \nThis workshop is made possible by a grant through Indiana Humanities. SUMMARY:Author Visit with Gabrielle Balkan
DESCRIPTION:What do dinosaurs\, witches\, maps\, Georgia O’Keefe\, cities\, states\, and flying all have in common? They’re all topics that Gabrielle Balkan has written about! Join us for a fun and family-friendly program where we learn and talk about Balkan’s book What a Map Can Do. Learn more about the upcoming National Book Festival\, meet Balkan\, and participate in fun mapping activities appropriate for children and families ages 6 and up. \nThis program will be held in the Indiana Authors Room and Indiana Young Readers Center at the Indiana State Library. The event is free and open to the public\, but registration is appreciated. Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore will be on site to sell books\, and Balkan will be available to sign books during the program. \nWhat a Map Can Do was selected to represent Indiana at the 2024 National Book Festival\, organized by the Library of Congress. The National Book Festival “Roadmap to Reading” is made possible by the generous support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Endowment for the Humanities with additional support from Chief Officers of State Library Agencies. \nABOUT THE INDIANA YOUNG READERS CENTER \nThe Indiana Young Readers Center Collection includes books by Indiana authors and illustrators for children and young adults. Indiana authors and illustrators are defined as having been born in Indiana\, having lived in Indiana for a significant period of time\, or currently living in Indiana. \nThe Indiana Young Readers Center opened in October 2016. It is a place for kids to learn more about Indiana and explore the literary works of Indiana authors and illustrators. \nABOUT THE EUGENE & MARILYN GLICK INDIANA AUTHORS AWARDS \nThe Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Awards honor the best books written by Indiana authors. Awarded every two years\, they celebrate Indiana writers\, shine a light on the Hoosier state’s literary community and deepen connections between Indiana writers and readers. They were established in 2009 as a vision of Eugene and Marilyn Glick and are a component of Indiana Humanities’ rich and diverse literary programming. \nABOUT THE NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL \nThe 2024 National Book Festival\, organized annually by the Library of Congress\, will be held in the nation’s capital at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Saturday\, August 24\, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (doors open at 8:30 a.m.). The event is free and open to the public. A selection of programs will be livestreamed online and videos of all programs will be available shortly after the Festival.

SUMMARY:Indiana Authors Awards Speaker Program: Ray Boomhower
DESCRIPTION:Gemini 3: Gus Grissom\, John Young\, and the Flight of the Unsinkable Molly Brown \nIndiana historian and biographer Ray E. Boomhower will examine the March 23\, 1965\, Gemini 3 mission that saw astronauts Gus Grissom and John Young make the first flight of the then-new Gemini spacecraft\, a crucial part of America’s quest to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth. The three-orbit mission had as its main goals testing the spacecraft’s orbit attitude and maneuvering system (a key to any future rendezvous and docking missions) and using the onboard computer to make a controlled reentry. \nBoomhower will explore how the Gemini program followed the initial Mercury Project\, Grissom’s role in the Gemini program\, how the new spacecraft was named\, and what happened on the mission\, which included the first corned-beef sandwich in space. \nTo register\, call 812-883-6495.

SUMMARY:Indiana Authors Awards Speaker Program: Susan Neville
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we welcome Indiana author Susan Neville to the Arts Depot—home of the Art Association of Randolph County. This event will be the second in a planned speaker series for our 2024–25 season. \nSusan will be discussing her new essay “My Bedeviled Country\,” and creative non-fiction as a genre. Susan’s collections of short fiction and hybrid fiction include “The Town of Whispering Dolls”\, winner of the Catherine Doctorow Prize for Innovative Fiction\, “In the House of Blue Lights”\, winner of the Richard Sullivan Prize; “Invention of Flight”\, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction; and “Indiana Winter”. Her stories have appeared in the Pushcart Prize anthology and in anthologies including “Extreme Fiction” (Longman) and “The Story Behind the Story” (Norton). \nOur nationally-registered landmark passenger depot building is located off SR 32. There is plenty of free parking and local restaurants nearby.
