DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition\, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America\, will continue its tour of Indiana at the Love Community Center in Rushville where it will be on display from July 5-Aug. 16\, 2026. The exhibition gives an in-depth look on America’s democracy and brings discussions about democracy to local communities. Host organizations will present a companion exhibition and series of programs in their communities during the exhibit’s six-week visit. \nThe exhibition will be open during Love Community Center normal operating hours: \nMonday-Friday: 5 am-9 pm\nSaturday: 7 am-5 pm\nSunday: 12 pm-5 pm \nThe exhibit will tour the seven small towns across Indiana during the Semiquincentennial\, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. DESCRIPTION:The Myaamia Heritage Foundation hosts the inaugural Myaamia Cultural Fest to celebrate the heritage and culture of Fort Wayne’s Indigenous people\, the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. \nActivities will include traditional Myaamia (Miami) games\, talks about the Tribe’s history\, and vendors selling handmade Myaamia artwork. Myaamia artists will offer live demonstrations and lead hands-on activities where visitors can explore art forms such as beadwork\, basketry\, and finger weaving. DESCRIPTION:The Michigan City Public Art 5K and Landmark Discovery Experience is a community event that combines wellness\, public art\, local history\, and interactive storytelling. Hosted in partnership with local organizations\, the event aligns with the Michigan City Public Art Commission’s 5K Run/Walk. Participants will follow a route connecting public sculptures throughout the community\, with opportunities to take selfies\, engage with public art installations\, and access audio storytelling through QR-enabled sites. \nIn addition to the 5K\, attendees will be introduced to the Landmark + Art Guide (LAG)\, a growing initiative highlighting additional landmarks\, historic sites\, and cultural destinations throughout Michigan City and northwest Indiana. SUMMARY:The Lost Photographs of Osbert Sumner
DESCRIPTION:In 1898\, Osbert Sumner (1873–1932) was given a camera by his coworkers after leaving his position at a downtown wholesale grocery. With it\, he captured a unique perspective of Indianapolis at the turn of the twentieth century. His glass negatives were left under the basement stairs of his home in Irvington\, where they remained hidden for decades\, only to be discovered by future owners who donated them to the Irvington Historical Society. There were no names\, no dates\, just a cache of incredible images waiting to be identified\, more than 300 of them. For more than seven years\, researchers at the Irvington Historical Society have worked to identify the people\, places\, and stories depicted in the images. \nDeedee Davis\, Irvington Historical Society board member and reference archivist for the Indianapolis City-County Archives\, will discuss the collaborative research process and the discoveries that offer a largely unseen perspective of early Indianapolis. DESCRIPTION:The Real Silk Hosiery Company was started in Indianapolis in 1922 and occupied several acres of land just south of the intersection of College Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue.
