DESCRIPTION:Join Sarah Botstein\, producer and co-director of The American Revolution\, for an inside look at the making of this epic PBS documentary. Sarah will share behind-the-scenes stories of how they brought the extraordinary history of our nation’s founding to the screen. Sarah will be joined in conversation by Kathryn Cramer Brownell\, Professor of History and Director of the Center for American Political History\, Media\, and Technology (CAPT) at Purdue University. \nSarah has collaborated with Ken Burns and Florentine Films for nearly 30 years\, producing some of the most acclaimed documentaries on PBS\, including The Vietnam War\, Hemingway\, Jazz\, and College Behind Bars. \nThis event is being held in partnership with WFYI\, the Purdue University College of Liberal Arts and its Center for American Political History\, Media\, and Technology (CAPT)\, the Indianapolis Public Library and PBS. \nThis event is free\, but advance registration is requested. \nCorporate funding for The American Revolution was provided by Bank of America. DESCRIPTION:The Indiana State Library Young Readers Center and Indiana Affiliate Center for the Book are pleased to announce an exciting upcoming event!  \n \nThe Center for the Book in the Library of Congress is a community of 56 Affiliated Centers existing to promote reading\, libraries and literacy across the country. There is an Affiliate Center for the Book in each of the 50 states\, the District of Columbia\, Puerto Rico\, the U.S. Virgin Islands\, Guam\, American Samoa and Northern Marianas. These Centers also elevate and advocate for each state’s unique literary heritage – developed by writers whose works reflect distinctively American places. Their stories\, novels\, essays\, poems and other written works\, rooted in the nation’s extraordinary diversity of people and geography\, are often featured in the programs supported by the Affiliated Centers for the Book. These Centers engage\, inspire\, and inform diverse audiences through author talks\, web-based programs\, podcasts\, videos\, writing challenges for young people\, book festivals and other events designed to advance appreciation of the written word. \nThe Indiana Affiliate Center for the Book is housed at the Indiana Young Readers Center at the Indiana State Library. The Indiana Affiliate Center for the Book (ICB) has several exciting programs that Hoosiers can get involved with to promote literacy. We jury the Firefly Early Literacy Book Award\, we have interactive displays and kiosks to teach about the Library of Congress and literacy\, we host the Indiana Statehood Day writing contest and the Letters About Literature writing contest\, we manage a program to offer storytime\, STEAM\, book\, Lego\, and escape experience kits for teachers and librarians across the state\, we host events and author visits\, we created the Indiana Literary Places Map\, and we support a collect of materials for young people written and illustrated by Indiana Authors and Illustrators. \nEach year the Affiliated Centers for the Book participate in the National Book Festival in Washington DC. Each Center for the Book Affiliate will staff a booth in the Festival’s Roadmap to Reading area to promote reading\, libraries and literacy in their state. Annually\, these Affiliated Centers for the Book select “Great Reads from Great Places.” Each affiliate chooses two titles. In most cases\, these books—one for youth and one for adults—are written by authors from their state or territory\, take place in their state or territory and/or celebrate local culture and heritage. In addition\, this year\, in honor of America’s 250th Semiquincentennial\, affiliate centers were encouraged to choose a title that connects to that theme in some way. The Indiana Affiliate Center for the Book works with Indiana Humanities to select titles. \nThe Indiana Affiliate Center for the Book is delighted to announce its National Book Festival Great Read titles for 2026!   The Last Adieu: Lafayette’s Triumphant Return\, the Echoes of Revolution\, and the Gratitude of the Republic by Ryan L. Cole is the 2026 Great Read Adult Selection. This book fits perfectly with the America’s 250th Semiquincentennial. When the Marquis de Lafayette returned to the United States in 1824\, the aging hero of the American Revolution was defeated politically and distraught over the fate of liberty in Europe. He set sail one last time from France for America after an absence of forty years. SUMMARY:Picturing Pierceton: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Through rare historical photographs paired with recent views\, historian and Pierceton native Joan Hostetler will bring Pierceton’s downtown to life. \nTopics include the oldest surviving Italianate-style structures dating to 1882\, the great fire of 1895 that destroyed the west side of First Street\, the work of hometown architect Frank Logan and how the antiques trade put Pierceton on the map. The downtown commercial district is remarkably intact and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nAttendees are also welcome to bring their own Pierceton-area photographs to the presentation. A scanner will be on hand to copy them into the Library’s digital archive during the program. \n  \nFunding for this Historic Preservation Month program is provided by a Historic Preservation Education Grant from Indiana Humanities and Indiana Landmarks.

DESCRIPTION:A Free Public Event Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary \nThe Studebaker National Museum and The History Museum are proud to join WNIT in presenting a special afternoon program exploring the enduring legacy of the American Revolution. : The History Museum’s Archivist\, Travis Childs\, will offer a talk on local Revolutionary War veterans\, and Studebaker National Museum Curator\, Kyle Sater\, will explore the Museum’s surprising connection to Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette. Guests will also have the opportunity to view Lafayette’s Barouche — the oldest vehicle in the Studebaker Collection. SUMMARY:David Trujillo & cat mahari at Indiana Humanities
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 16\, 2025\, at 6:30 PM at Indiana Humanities for a public lecture with the Speculative Play and Just Futurities program scholars in residence\, David Trujillo and cat mahari. \n\n\nSet in the Vietnam War era\, David Trujillo’s stage play Many May Not Return reflects the complex relationship in the Mexican-American community with the concept of national military service as recalled in three wars—the current one\, Korea\, and World War II. A Chicano/Latino family in crisis as a consequence of two forces: the undeclared Vietnam War and their economic conditions as a working-class family. How do families face the issues of war while living in a nation that is continuously at war? \nNestled by the ecstatic communal of Chicago House and sensual partnership of Chicago Stepping\, cat mahari’s Sugar in the Raw is a journey of intimacy\, trust\, and touch in Blk Chicago.  Dovetailing with contemporary Blk Chicago cultural divergences as part of its process of resonance between the past\, present\, and future; the project journeys through surrealist animation\, powerful vignettes\, choreographic passages\, archival footage and autobiographical interviews. Spanning multiple generations and crossing relationship paradigms\, the film will be a performative tapestry of community through which changes strengthen bonds of commonality\, and build on tension between individual expression and partnership.\n______\n\nDavid Trujillo (Los Angeles\, California) is a labor and community activist and working-class playwright. His company\, Community Professionals\, was founded in 2019 and provides an outlet for experimental community-based writing and theater presentations. Raised in Fresno\, California\, where his parents were farmworkers\, Trujillo worked in the fields himself. He left to enter college at California State University\, Los Angeles; attend the Harvard Trade Union program; and received a Master’s degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is currently retired from union work and continues to write in Los Angeles\, California. Trujillo orients himself through politically conscious plays that tackle racism\, oppression\, and exploitation presented to the audience through creative storytelling that both critiques and empowers them. However\, he is not just telling a story; the plot always delivers a message for how to proceed. Trujillo challenges the idea of what theater should be while addressing working-class and social justice issues is paramount. Past stage plays include ‘Filthy Laundry’ (2024)\, ‘Many May Not Return’ (2022)\, ‘Legacy of A Garage Band\,’ (2023)\, ‘Vincent’ (2024) and others. He continues to write and believes that in the years to come\, class-conscious art and political theater will be more important than ever. \ncat mahari (Chicago\, Illinois) is founder of the Art Omi: Blk\, an international residency program supporting self-identified Black artists\, she cultivates spaces for artists to expand their practices through experimentation and community dialogue. mahari is a long-time culture bearer of Hip Hop and House. Her interest lies in thinking through assumptive logics of emotional and psychomateriality. She considers the public-facing practice of her work to require a non-disciplinary imagined root\, where she engages visibility through sound and movement as generative architectonics—material\, social\, and emotional. Her work examines the body as both source and conduit\, shaped by lineages and improvisational rigor of the vernacular. cat’s most recent project is blk ark: the impossible manifestation (2022– 2024)\, performed at MCA-Chicago\, Pact Zollverein\, and CultureHub NYC\, a triptych installation of movement\, sound\, and text on play and Hip Hop anarcho-choreographies. With a distinctive vision of interdisciplinary art-making\, cat’s awards include a 2025 Chicago Dancemakers Lab Award\, 2024 DCASE Independent Artist Project grant\, a 2023 MAP Fund Microgrant\, 2022 Dance/USA Fellowship\, and a 2021 3Arts Award.\n_______\nPlease be advised that this public lecture will explore subjects related to race\, violence\, and identity. Central to SPJF is a residency for emerging scholars and creators\, fostering intellectual and creative growth. SPJF also hosts weekly colloquia for students and faculty\, featuring resident interactions and collaborative learning opportunities. Speculative Play and Just Futurities is made possible through the generous support of the Mellon\nFoundation. DESCRIPTION:“Black Freedom: From Selma to Soweto” Public Lecture featuring Dr. Kanika Batra\n\n\nBlack Freedom from Selma to Soweto examines women’s leadership in 1960s–70s student movements\, revealing their vital role in racial and gender equality in the U.S. and South Africa.  Join the IU Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Institute on August 19\, 2025\, 6:30pm at Indiana Humanities for a public lecture with Dr. Kanika Batra\, their August 2025 scholar in residence with the Speculative Play and Just Futurities program.\n\n\nAlthough Selma and Soweto are the most famous markers of two globally inspirational struggles for racial equality in the last half of the twentieth century\, the movements themselves are known largely through the lives and ideas of a few charismatic leaders. Charting multiple forms of leadership and influence\, movement participants\, historians\, social scientists\, and novelists has revised this focus on male leaders\, exclusion of women’s roles\, and the perception that South African student activists borrowed their ideas from those in the United States.\n\n\n\n\nDr. Kanika Batra is Professor of English and Affiliate Faculty in Women’s Studies at Texas Tech University. She researches and teaches transnational feminist and queer studies\, globalization\, urbanization\, postcolonial and comparative literature.
