Event Details
In early June, the Downtown Angola Coalition will dedicate a sculpture of abolitionist Sojourner Truth on the Steuben County courthouse lawn. The sculpture commemorates a month-long visit that Truth made to the county in May 1861, which included a speech on the courthouse lawn. The sculpture received funding through a Preserving Women’s Legacy Grant offered by Indiana Humanities and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
In conjunction with the dedication, the Steuben County Theater will stage With Courage and Conviction, a play that explores the politics and abolitionist movement in Orland, Indiana, in the mid-nineteenth century. The play is adapted by a book of the same name by Michael T. Biesiada, who will hold a question-and-answer session afterward.
The play takes place at Trine University’s Wells Theatre (in Taylor Hall) on Saturday, June 5, at 7 p.m.
