On Sunday, June 6, the Downtown Angola Coalition will unveil a life-size sculpture of Sojourner Truth on the lawn of the Steuben County courthouse. The sculpture commemorates a speech that Truth delivered on the lawn in May 1861. Amid protests, Truth spoke against slavery and in support of the Civil War. The Downtown Angola Coalition received a Preserving Women’s Legacy Grant from Indiana Humanities and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs to support the creation of the sculpture and associated programming. The grant was an initiative of the Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial celebration.
