INconversation with Marc Leeds
Join us for a conversation exploring the surprising connections between Kurt Vonnegut and Mary Shelley’s most monstrous creation, moderated by Emily Beckman, director of IUPUI’s Medical Humanities program.
Event Details

Marc Leeds, the editor of The Vonnegut Encyclopedia and long-time correspondent with the author, joins us as we collide two of our favorite things, Frankenstein and Indy’s beloved rascal, Kurt Vonnegut! The peg for our conversation is Vonnegut’s delightfully strange and lesser-known short play “Fortitude,” which imagines a modern-day Dr. Norbert Frankenstein’s relationship with Sylvia, his patient who is more machine than human. From this jumping off point we’ll talk about the author’s fascination with Mary Shelley and her creation, the medical ethics questions raised by both stories, and the enduring appeal of Frankenstein as an inspiration for writers, filmmakers, artists, scientists and other creators. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Emily Beckman of the IUPUI Medical Humanities program. Complimentary beers from our friends at Scarlet Lane Brewing Company ensure the conversation will flow for Vonnegut-heads and Frankenstein fans alike!

This special Quantum Leap-inspired INconversation is presented in partnership with the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library.
