The Art of Becoming Black in America
Explore how the creative arts have given African Americans a means for expressing resistance and individual empowerment
Event Details

The Art of Becoming Black in America, a two-part symposium, brings together researchers, practitioners and artists to provide a contextual framework for considering the role that creative-arts practices have functioned as both potent literacies of resistance for African Americans and as a restorative practice that legitimizes and elevates individual voices and asserts their collective power. This first session focuses on the first topic, the “arts as potent literacies of resistance.” It will feature a panel discussion as well as debriefing sessions, including small-group conversations that invite attendees to contribute their own reflections and perspectives on arts as social justice practice.
