Students in grades 6-8 across the state of Indiana are invited to submit an entry for the Indy 500 100th Running essay contest.

Students are asked to respond to the following writing prompt: “With great fanfare and excitement, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place May 29, 2016. This historical event will bring national and international attention to Indiana. Race fans from all over the world will attend the Indianapolis 500. Write a letter to the race fans to welcome them to Indiana and to highlight the significance of the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.”



1st place participant will receive 4 tickets to the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500


2nd and 3rd place participants will each receive 4 tickets to the IPL 500 Festival Parade.

Official Rules

1. The essay contest is open to all Indiana students who are in grades 6-8.

2. Entries are limited to 400 words or less.

3. Entries may be typed or handwritten.

4. Entries will be judged on the basis of focused ideas, compelling word choice, strong voice, and standard writing principles.

5. Entries must be accompanied by an official entry form. (In addition, please print the student’s name on the back of the essay.)

6. Entries must be postmarked by April 27, 2016.

7. The winner will be announced the week of May 9, 2016.

8. Essays will not be returned.
