“Serving Up Indiana” writing contest winners announced! Drumroll, please…

The Indiana Historical Society and Storytelling Arts of Indiana have announced the winners of the More than 150 students ages 9-12 from all across Indiana contributed essays or poems about their favorite Indiana food memory, and the six students listed below were the best of the best. The six winners read their stories at the Holiday Author Fair at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center on Dec. 3.

Here’s an excerpt from the 1st place essay by Alec Bevelhimer of Indianapolis:

“My Grandma grew up with my Great Grandma Trachsel in Wolcott, Indiana. Wolcott is a small town north of Lafayette. A lot of the people in Wolcott are farmers, and a bunch of them grow corn. They grow two types of corn, field corn and sweet corn. Every summer, once the corn has grown and started to get picked, the Meadowlake church has something they call the corn boil. The farmers would bring corn to the church in their trucks, and they would boil the corn in a huge black pot outside. All the families would bring different dishes and desserts. Even though I’m only ten, I’ve gone to the corn boils five or six times, and it is the best corn I have ever tasted.”
